First, it’s great that @MichaelWhelan is on Mastodon. What an amazing artist.

Second, his recent post featured a spherical alien that I instantly recognized from my childhood. https://mastodon.art/@MichaelWhelan/112428886103083708

It’s from this book, published in 1980, which had a cover image that is also burned into my brain.

damoncjones,
@damoncjones@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa @MichaelWhelan I also had that book! I must have gone cover-to-cover on it dozens of times as a kid. I was separated from my copy many years ago and occasionally I find them in local shops, average price about $50.

If you got upset at me for pointing out that more people died of Covid under Biden than Trump, in large part because Biden rolled back common sense restrictions that were in place under Trump...

Then you'll hate me pointing out that Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Chinese EVs, and Biden is upping that to 100% tariff.

https://insideevs.com/news/719283/chinese-ev-tariffs-biden-quadruple/

We can't allow the US to get off of fossil fuels... unless US billionaires win! 🤡

damoncjones,
@damoncjones@mastodon.social avatar

@tojiro @mekkaokereke the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf are both low cost. The bolt is the smaller of the two, but the Leaf is more sedan or compact in description. I have driven both, and while I liked the Bolt a lot (previous car before final EV purchase was a Chevy Spark), the Leaf was more comfortable to me. The Bolt has a slightly larger battery and usually sells cheaper, but both cars are slated for hold/discontinue this year.

damoncjones,
@damoncjones@mastodon.social avatar

@tojiro @mekkaokereke A further point about the hold/discontinue on both cars: Bolt as far I know is being Dc-ed. The Leaf is being put on hold for minimum 2 years while Nissan works up a new Leaf that will be slightly larger but not Nissan Ariya sized, projected year 2026. They also are working on a smaller EV that will use a newer and better dry-cell battery that will be Nissan standard moving forward. The plant was just built and opened this year.

@RepShontelBrown I understand that in order for Uukraine to get aid, Israel was gonna get it too. Even though they've demonstrated they not only don't need it but are actively using it to genocidal goals. Thank you for supporting Ukraine and the others that aren't doing genocides.

The fact that you can follow the president of the United States (@potus) from your Mastodon account instead of being forced to have an X or Threads account for it is a huge W in my book. Of course our team is fully available to help if they'd want to set up Mastodon on whitehouse.gov. I believe governments should not rely on 3rd party platforms to connect with their constituents.

Xbox laying off 2,000 workers because "the industry didn't grow enough" is obtuse at best.

And it ignores a simple economic reality even a toddler should be able to understand:

Infinite growth is a goddamn myth.

It’s the great collective delusion of capitalism.

An industry cannot grow year on year indefinitely.

At some point you run the fuck out of consumers.

If your business model is based on hand waving hypothetical growth, you’re either lying to us or you’re lying to yourself.

damoncjones,

@Daojoan yes. This is what alt-reich assholes like Alex Jones and Stefan Molyneux and many others don't understand. They really believe their message appeals to everyone, and anyone that rejects them is an example of "shadow banning".

I always think it's funny when right-wing types get mad at Star Wars for becoming "woke." They didn't notice the obvious fascist imagery? They didn't realize that they were the villains in this whole cinematic universe? So unobservant! I would never make that mistake! I'd know if I was the villain in a whole cinematic universe!

Anyway, I can't wait to watch the second installment of Dune! What'll happen next in Arrakis(Iraq)? Will the spice(oil) flow? Will Paul's Jihad topple the empire(us)?

damoncjones,
@damoncjones@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke all of that, but also how Dune and a Japanese period film (I think it's Dark Tower) greatly influenced Star Wars along with of course, the Vietnam War (Lucas said Vietnam was more the inspiration than WW2, although the parallels are obvious). One look at most of Dune (came out before A New Hope), plus the Japanese film, and it's undeniable. That said, Sci-Fi was always Woke, which is what Conservatives will never understand.

@CelloMomOnCars truth. Also, at my Nissan dealer, typically the people that know the most about EVs are customers like me and the EV mechanics on staff. My sales guy was nice enough, and service advisor is nice, but they admit they don't know beans about EV's and Nissan has been in the game years ahead of everyone else. I've spoken with a lot of dealership people over the last 2 years and most don't know anything, even how to charge them. My state is EV friendly, too.

After a long track record of releasing inaccurate, wildly misinformed statements, factually false claims and unreliable projections, we can infer a simple, if uncomfortable, truth.

Elon Musk fucking lies.

He lies about hyperloops, tunnels, Mars colonisation and self-driving cars.

And we can safely assume, he's lying about Neuralink.

@Daojoan one of my favorite quotes that I will butcher here is, "Never attribute to Evil, that which can be explained by Stupid."

Meaning of course, that I don't think much of what "wealthy celebrity" people do is ever smart enough to be evil. It's either stupid in pursuit of money/power, or stupid because they have unchecked amounts of money/power and love to flex. Actual Evil, I think, is rare.

Daojoan, to random
@Daojoan@mastodon.social avatar

One of the biggest problems in modern discourse is we keep saying "But" instead of saying "And"

Example: "Hamas committed murder but IDF strikes have killed innocent people" immediately sets up justification and whataboutism.

Whereas "Hamas committed murder and IDF strikes have killed innocent people" gives us objectivity and a realistic world view that doesn't justify anything.

damoncjones,
@damoncjones@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan I realized this as a personal flaw many years ago and have tried to catch it when the words are leaving my mouth. It's a choice that often makes for better compromises when I need it.

"Your work is good, but it could be better", or, "Your work is good and I want to help it be great"
. One of those is much more constructive, and sets me and the listener into a better mood, usually, as an example.

Like, it would have cost him nothing to tell Israel to knock it off. Nothing. It would have cost nothing to speak the truth at his position, about how bad things are, there. I despise conspiracy shit generally, but it's like...does Israel have something deep on Joe? The likely thing of course is that we're seeing what the effect of having a person like him in office is.
