Discussions about nuclear weapons being deployed in orbit are slightly better with a cat in your lap (but only slightly). Wowee, my meetings today are on another level of stressful... I'm so glad I've got baby goats...

Something I've been noticing about search engines (well, google) recently is how bad they are at respecting word order in cases where it matters. Like, you search "convert x to y" and they match "convert y to x". Or this morning I'm searching "inset diamond in square equation" and i am indeed finding overwhelmingly things that contain both the words "diamond" and "equation", such as the "diamond method" for quadratics. But nothing related to insetting diamonds in squares.

excess,

@mcc
I now just asume that google's " " are actual air quotes to denote sarcasm, instead of the old way of preserving the exact sentence.

  • Oh, so you are telling me that "this exact order is important"? Sure, let me fetch you amazon affiliate links so you can "order" online a bunch of "important" stuff you don't actually need ;)

Schrödinger's cat. They want to be both inside and outside, until you open the door. Then reality colapses into their true intentions, which was always the opposite as what you expected, thus the need to open the door again to correct your very embarrassing mistake, frankly.
You should do better next time.

Do people want AI in their browsers?

If the survey I did on Mastodon is anything to go by, most people do not.

2% Want AI in their browser.
25% Want AI in their browser, if their data is not used for other purposes, such as ads and profiling.
73% Do not want AI in their browser at all.

575 entered the poll.

A lot of browser companies are now pushing AI in their browsers.

I guess the 2% have a lot of browsers to choose between.

Microsoft pushed an update for windows 10 that adds copilot right next to the clock in the taskbar.

Fortunately, if you ask copilot how to disable the feature it gives you 3 different ways to do it.

Thank you copilot! Now go eat $#¡+ please.

Potter-heads please fact check me as I haven't read the books, but apparently there's even mention of goblin extermination which is put in doubt?

"[...], and had goblins killed in ludicrous ways such as drowning them, dropping them off buildings, poisoning them, and cooking them in pies, earning him the epithet "Goblin-Crusher." However, as The Quibbler is a tabloid magazine, this theory is debatable and most likely untrue."

    When you are angry, pause.
    When you are frustrated, pause.
    When you are jealous, pause.
    When you are offended, pause.

    Give yourself a moment to reflect. Often our reactions do not merit our response. Taking a pause helps us to take in, evaluate, and determine an appropriate response.

    These feelings are calling you to action. Pause, take the call, and move forward.

    In win10 if you select English UK as your language instead of English US you'll get the slimmed down european version without all the spyware preinstalled.
    Probably the same happens with win11, haven't tried it though (hopefully, I'll never have to).
    If it works, it should cut your article in half at least.

    📸 I took these photos in 2011, while Julian was in the same High Court in London where the hearing is happening today; (photos previously unreleased, now under (CC) BySa or LAL 1.3)

    Today's hearing is about requesting a permission (!) to appeal (!) his extradition to the US (!) where he faces certain death in prison for his work as a journalist and publisher.

    Then, he was appealing against his first extradition request (!) to Sweden...

    (a thread) 1/14

    An analog photo taken in 2011 of Julian Assange whispering to the hear of Kristinn Hrafnsson. The background is the gothic, cathedral-esque High Court of Justice in London. The colour are yellow/red denoting an antique lighting. The edge of the frame is burnt, indicating a recently loaded film, and blur on Assange's hand and parts of his face evokes a rather dynamic conversation. The photo is CC BySa (or LAL 1.3) J. Zimmermann

    excess,

    @kravietz @jz
    I'm not informed (nor misinformed) enough about Assange to have a solid opinion, but isn't it "but that's how law enforcement works" regarding fake rape accusations enough to rally behind whistle blowers? I may or may not like him personally, but his fight is worth fighting, and I'm certainly not gonna do it myself, so yeah, all my fucking sympathy for the guy. I may not choose to go and have a beer with the guy if he's ever free, but I support his cause.

    excess,

    @kravietz @jz What's your take on the accusers supposedly confessing to being railroaded into making the accusations in the first place?

    excess,

    @kravietz @jz
    Those strategies seldom aren't meant to uphold in court, they are used to gain the favor of the public and sow doubt so the authorities can then get away with their own indiscretions and rule bending.
    It doesn't matter if they were true or not, only that you and I aren't sure about it and now disagree on the bigger issue.

    excess,

    @kravietz @jz
    I do understand now what you meant by "that's how cops work". You assumed they were investigating a valid claim in good faith, as they should.
    I assumed they used it as a pressure tactic from the get go to get away with bending some rules, hence this discussion.
    I now see you aren't defending such tactics, you just don't think there were shenanigans involved in the first place?

    excess,

    @kravietz @jz
    I would certainly love to live in that planet ❤️

    excess,

    @kravietz @jz
    I won't pretend I understand their motivations, I just can't take it at face value and assume good faith in a high profile case like this with this much at stake.
    I would love him to get a proper trial for that allegations instead of an instant life incarceration because of a 1917 loophole who just happens to benefit the status quo.

    excess,

    @kravietz @jz
    Yes, I know. I would love to see him in trial as much as you do. But it's gonna be hard to do it if he is imprisoned for bullshit political charges thought, isn't it?

    Anyone out there standing next to a nerd. I would like you to try a tic tac toe variant and tell me if it's interesting:

    Kriegspiel tic tac toe

    You can’t see your opponent’s moves. But, if you try to take a space they’re already on, you lose your turn, and the space they’ve taken is revealed. Goal remains 3 in a row.

    excess,

    @ZachWeinersmith
    I feel a regular 3×3 grid would be over way to fast? I can see some strategy possible, but with a board so small and limited it'll probably come down to pure luck most of the time.
    I can see it working better with a 4×4 grid though.
    Very interesting idea.

    excess,

    @ZachWeinersmith
    Ahh, you beat me to it, was typing exactly that. But there ends the strategy, at least the obvious one. Next move is luck, maybe the one after that could involve some baiting?
