@DropBear @serge There is so much wrong with your post that it would take forever to properly unpack... Primarily you are tokenizing Jews via one of the most fringe sects out there. Secondly, you fundamentally do not understand what Zionism is.

EDITED: One of journalism's consistent flaws is ignoring relevant context.

Case in point is this NY Times story about a judge tossing out a new federal regulation limiting extortionate credit card late fees.

Here's the context the Times didn't care to include: The financial companies went forum shopping, and landed one of their favorite Trump-appointed judges, who (to his credit) objected to the process, but then predictably ruled against the administration.

Journalistic malpractice, IMO.

Weekend reading: I wrote about how mainstream commentators constantly raise the specter of 1968 to denounce the student protests - willfully ignoring the long pattern of leftwing student movements acting as an indispensable corrective.

Some thoughts from this week’s piece:

@tzimmer_history The problem here is that this particular protest movement is riddled with antisemitism and islamist apologia.

Booing an Israeli singer at Eurovision, setting aside opinions on Israel’s right to exist and the actions of its current leadership, isn’t going to bring peace to anyone.

It’s moronic.

galad,
@galad@mastodon.social avatar

@MJ It’s like booing an American because MAGA is a thing.

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

I’m not convinced of that. In much the same way that Israel accepted the UN mandate as permission to declare a nation, the Palis could hold a referrendum on a 2SS that could be enforced by global peacekeepers for a minimum of 15 years. Convince israel of peaceful intent, and even their hardliners would have trouble selling endless war.

@shoq One of the major barriers to Palestinian statehood is their consistent refusal to recognize the legitimacy of Israel. I don't see that changing any time soon.

galad,
@galad@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq In ~80 years Palestinians have refused every single opportunity for a two state solution.

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

Israel is a powerful nuclear-armed nation. They are never going to abandon Israel, and will never accept any political solution as long as they are routinely attacked. And no one can force them to do otherwise. Qatar knows this, yet they continue to fund Hamas. They work both sides against the middle and the middle always loses. Someone must start preaching meaningful compromise or this could go on for decades if not centuries.

galad,
@galad@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq I fully expect Israel to start routinely assassination high ranking members of HAMAS and other Salafist groups.

@lakelady I can’t speak for @galad, but in my view, the evidence is in the fact that 100% of their very public ire and rhetoric is aimed at the US and Israel, rather than the biggest obstacle to ending the violence: Hamas. I have not yet seen a single exception. It may exist, but I haven’t seen it.

galad,
@galad@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq @lakelady I don't think I've heard any of them call for Qatar to expel the leadership of Hamas.

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

It’s so easy to pick sides in conflicts like this. But that’s a mistake, if one ever wants to see peace in that region. Anyone that thinks Israel will back away, or concede anything at this point is not dealing with reality. They made their concessions (in their mind) long ago, and once rejected, they feel justified in keeping the spoils of conflict. If there’s to be any solution, it must start with accepting much of the status quo. Unless you have the armies or leverage to change it.

galad,
@galad@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq The problem is that Palestinian groups and their nation state benefactors have had a very long history of negotiating with Israel in bad faith. Ceasefires and peace treaties were usually intended to last only as long as it took Palestinians to rearm.

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

See? Same problem as Hamas itself. When people don’t actually want to resolve the conflict, they make demands that can never be met. And that is precisely why so many Israeli hardliners feel justified in doing whatever it takes to destroy Hamas. Even if the death toll sickens some of them. They see it as their only option with an enemy that lets uncomprising terrorists lead them to only more death and destruction.

@shoq @lakelady They’d be better off pressuring the Biden administration to sanction IDF units under the Leahy Law. It’s already on the books and it’s something Biden is mulling over anyway. Then again, many of these protesters don’t actually want to affect real change.

There are times when I think that antisemitism on the Fediverse is going down, but really it's just that our local moderation is going well.

Nonetheless, unless instances' moderators actually take an active stand against it, the result is that it's up to victims of hate speech to be constantly on guard.

I for one am sick of seeing:

Nazi/Holocaust Inversion
Blood Libel Accusations
Harassment of Jews Talking About Antisemitism
Deicide
Word Swapping (ie "Zionists" or "Israelis" used instead of Jews")
Accusations of Weaponized Antisemitism

On the Fediverse.

If you say you're against antisemitism, then take action, clean up your own instance and start taking other instances who allow this kind of hate speech on your instance seriously.

galad,
@galad@mastodon.social avatar

@serge I'm not sure it's enough to simply block the instances that allow this behavior. Kolektiva, for example, is by far the most antisemitic instance I've seen so far on Mastodon and it's moderators seem to fully support Hamas.
