It is not Linux's job to stop you from shooting your foot. If you so choose to do so, then it is Linux's job to deliver Mr. Bullet to Mr. Foot in the most efficient way it knows.
Kids in High School:
"I don't understand why I have to take biology, chemistry, and other basic science classes. When am I ever going to use this stuff in my life?!"
As Adults:
"Vaccines cause autism, GMOs are unsafe, climate change is a lie, the earth is flat, and chemtrails!! l've done my research. If you disagree with me, you're a sheep!!"
I've had a few more people accuse me of being an AI, so here's your semi-annual reminder that I am indeed a living breathing person.
Last weekend I went to a wedding with my girlfriend, who is also not an AI. You can tell that I am indeed human because AI does not know how to wear a suit. It will someday, but the technology is simply not there yet.
i remember my Gentoo days. there is. groove worn in my hard disk from recompiling transcode and mplayer due to a dependency cycle 🤣
im on #archlinx now. its beautiful. fast upgrades and stays out of my way. until one day my system doesn't boot cause I didn't follow the instructions on the webpage before updating... 🤣🤣🤣
Are you using WhatsApp? Get ready for Ads apart from regular spam and scams. WhatsApp explores ads in chat app as Meta seeks revenue boost https://www.ft.com/content/41f334a5-856c-4512-b550-eb6062036224 . According to two sources, Meta is considering implementing a subscription fee for an ad-free version of the app, but this idea is unpopular among many insiders. Why?
@nixCraft I was using Whatsapp back when it cost a dollar a year. Before Facebook owned them. Few years ago when they wanted to merge account data, i deleted WhatsApp and moved to Signal
So yes, Google Chrome just rolled out a new way to track you and serve ads How to fix it? Switch to Firefox. Not to Edge. Alternatively, if you need Chome for work. Visit chrome://settings/adPrivacy and turn off each setting. Of course get Adbloker too ;)
@nixCraft Im going to put a "Ad blocker not detected" popup on my website, and encourage people to install adblockers. @stefan has a nice WordPress plugin.
Stefan, if u have a simple small JavaScript (not WordPress specific) already, let me know and ill happily use it.

@graphito Red hat Linux back in 99. Ran X11 Gnome with Metacity, bash and emacs. Still using Linux today. But Im on Arch with zsh, kde/plasma Wayland and NeoVim. Probably the only thing that I still use now from '99 is less 😃
@NumbersCanBeFun@graphito I distro shopped as well. Red hat, then Gentoo (5 years), then Debian (10 years) now arch (4 years). Each time there was an unavoidable reason forcing the change. Hopefully i never have to change from Arch again...
@davidho This is happening in many places in the US too. Here they had an agreement with an escooter company, which they are choosing not to renew. So if u want to ride ur own escooter u can.
Honestly I think the first step to fixing things is stopping government subsidies to gas, and maybe increase auto taxes. If operating cars cost a lot more, people will hopefully use alternatives
A lot of developers reports they use #Linux as their main professional OS (only 47% in 2022 though), so let’s see why a Linux distribution is the best choice for most developers:
(Yes, not ALL developers, there are always exceptions)
@readbeanicecream@thelinuxEXP@djinnsour i used to do debian with fvwm. But a new cpu and 4k screen forced me to switch away. I use arch and kde/plasma wayland now. Runs great 😃
@djinnsour@readbeanicecream@thelinuxEXP the issue is if you have a 14" 4k laptop screen that i want 2x scaled and a larger 4k screen that i dont want scaled at all, then you cant do it on xorg. Wayland handles it very well. When i switched i tried both gnome and kde, and at that time kde handed the different scales better (though it was usable on gnome too). I loved fvwm. Used it for 15years. Alas...
@math The West Virginia University Provost's Office is recommending closing the MS and Ph.D. programs in Math. It is the only Ph.D. program in Math in the entire state, and about 10% of all WVU Ph.D.'s are in Math.
