JFC, people in tech are really out there saying that language models will be better at therapy, financial advice, and career advice than trained people.

WTF is wrong with you people? Do you really have no clue about what other people’s jobs actually involve?

Language models can’t even do maths how are they supposed to get good at financial advice?

And therapy? Just… 😑

What’s wrong with people in tech?

Teeny-Tiny General Mastodon Tip for Newcomers 🐘✨:

If you are looking for a Mastodon feature you've heard about and cannot find it 🔎

Keep in mind that Mastodon mobile apps (yes, plural) are all different and integrate Mastodon's features differently. This is why in my guides I always use the web interface as a common baseline.

If you can't find a feature in your Mastodon mobile app, login to your account from a browser instead. You might very well find what you were looking for right there! 🌐✨

This link captures the confusion about how to pronounce "fsck":

https://lwn.net/Articles/190223/

Here's the truth. Ted Kowalski, username frodo, may he rest in peace, was the original author, just down the hall from my office in Murray Hill, and his name for the program had a 'u' where there is now an 's'. Management made him change it for distribution, but they couldn't make him change his pronunciation.

Masking to me is like speaking a foreign language that you are only partially fluent in — it works okay until suddenly it doesn’t

imagine: you’re vibing, you’re nailing the accent, verbs are almost conjugating themselves, you’re dropping some idioms, you’re even catching some of what the native speakers are rapidly saying, and they seem to be following you too — and then suddenly your brain locks and you have no words to even explain or apologize or clarify so you either smile dumbly (in both the sonic and mental senses), or dig yourself deeper by reusing the same wrong words as before, or try to exit gracefully, but it’s too late, and they won’t even explain if they’re upset or what rule you broke cause they don’t even know either, it’s all subconscious and intuitive to them, so they either get mad or (worse) sigh and look away from you and talk amongst themselves

Seriously though, I’m tired of people starting new social networks with investor money. Those investors want their money back and the entrepreneurs starting the social networks are going to need to pay them back with money obtained from the members.

I want the USENET model back. It was the original Fediverse. Community is an outcome of the protocol.

Just a reminder as we all try to build networks here that contain useful, trustworthy and factual info (and cats).
Favouriting (=liking on bird site) content is great for telling me you like it, but **boosting **content (=re-tweeting on the bird site) gets it out there to everyone who follows you.
**This **is how we build new networks.
And we need to do that because mis- and disinformers are better at this than us.

Em0nM4stodon, to privacy

Privacy is foremost about Consent 🔒✔️

Privacy is about the right to choose what to share with whom, where, and for how long.

For example, one might be comfortable sharing photos of their face on the public internet, but not photos of their body, or vice-versa.

Privacy also has modularity 🔐🔓

For example, one might be comfortable sharing their face on a locked Mastodon account, but not on Instagram. What they feel comfortable sharing might vary from one context to another.

It should never be assumed that because someone shared some information on a certain platform or at a certain time, that there is consent to share it elsewhere or at a later time without prior explicit consent.

Privacy levels may vary per individual, per place, and per time 👤 :mastodon: 📆

Privacy is about Consent,
and Consent, in this context, is about control over one's personal data.

Consent to share should always be revocable at any time. Data deletion and the Right to Erasure should be universal.

Privacy is a Human Right, and by integrating these concepts in our values and technologies, we will all benefit 🔒✨

After seeing what happened at , after seeing yet another round of nonsense layoffs across so many good people at so many companies, we need unions and we need them yesterday.

If you are in a union already, build strength. We are going to need it.

How is writing your password on a Post-It note and sticking it on your monitor not a perfect example of 2FA?!

reminder, if you are new, and looking for people to follow you back, then before you follow someone:

  1. give yourself an avatar.
  2. give yourself "i am not a wanker" bio.
  3. post and pin an introduction with hashtags.
Otherwise, with waves of new people, it becomes hard to know you from Adam. And I tell you, I am not following Adam! Fuck that guy.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as crows are, in fact, crows and ravens, or as I’ve recently taken to calling them, members of the Corvus genus. Crows are not an independent taxon unto itself, but rather a loose subgroup of species in the genus Corvus characterized by generally smaller body size. Many people see different species of corvids out in the wild every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the belief has taken hold that crows and ravens are somehow distinct species or genera, and many bird nerds are not aware that there are several species commonly referred to as either "crows" or "ravens". There really is only one genus, and these people are seeing members of it, but there is no clear distinction between crows and ravens. You may be looking at an American crow, or a carrion crow, or a rook, or a common raven, or a thick-billed raven, and they're all part of the same taxon. They're not even distinguished by size. The little raven, which lives in Australia, is the same size as an American crow, for example, and doesn't share the typical features associated with ravens, such as a thick, bent beak and shaggy throat feathers. All the so-called "crows" are really just different species of the Corvus genus.

balrogboogie,

@schratze I will never not post this meme when corvids come up
