99.9% of jobs do not require urgency of any kind, really they don't. We've all had a boss who acts like someone will die if we don't hit some made up deadline by people who don't even do the job. No one needs their meal 1 minute faster or the paperwork before tomorrow morning. Your time off actually doesn't need to wait. Sometimes I think about how legitimately bad most businesses are at time management and hiring, and I wonder how they manage to exist at all.

I had a friend who came up with a better system of time estimation.

A. First make an honest assessment of the time you think it will take.

B. Double it.

C. Go to the next unit of time.

e.g.

2 hours -> 4 days
3 days-> 6 weeks
1 week-> 2 months

It was surprisingly accurate, at least as far as lab research goes.

1989's Macintosh SE/30L is remembered as one of Apple's biggest flops. MacWorld criticised its rotated L display as "...bringing all of the issues and none of the benefits of a true L display", while MacWeek called it "Some kind of deranged P display nobody asked for".

Two bits of useless trivia:

  1. The L did not refer to the shape of the screen, but rather it was the first of a planned series for left-handed folk. Poor sales led to the abandonment of the entire line.

  2. In development the codename for the left-hand project was "sinister", which in hindsight was probably not the best choice.

It's a shame you don't have the keyboard that came with it with the reversed layout.

I have "good" dental insurance.
In August I get to pay $3500 for oral surgery and another $3500 in January.
The insurance only pays $2000 per year which explains the schedule. But I would be paying $11K without insurance, so I guess I'm lucky?

I have a question about the tropes you use in your book. Are they explained in the book, or do I need go to your website for the full explication?

For example, at the climax when the cop tells you to GET OUT NOW because the call is coming from within the house, do you explain how blind obedience to authority is a hallmark of proto-fascism, and that their knowledge of the caller's location is a signifier of the surveillance state?

There are good reporters and columnists, including conservatives, at the NYT.

Ross Douthat is not one of them.

Among other things, he is an anti-abortion extremist that believes a fertilized egg is a person, so abortion at any age, and any form of birth control that prevents implantation is murder.

His other views are equally obnoxious.

Notice he does not say Trump is too old.

The only reason he would write such a column is that he's afraid Biden will win.
