Lynn Conway, electricial engineer and computer scientist, co-architect of the VLSI design revolution, and transgender activist, was born #OTD in 1938.

She invented Dynamic Instruction Scheduling at IBM, but IBM fired her when they learned she was transitioning.

4mc,

@mcnees This was surprisingly out of character for the IBM that I worked with and for from 1974 onwards, they had and remained always on the side of progressives, they had the largest number of women, African American, and other minorities in meaningful positions. So reading about this was very disappointing.

Here is the conclusion of the IBM side. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeremyalicandri/2020/11/18/ibm-apologizes-for-firing-computer-pioneer/?sh=359185d667d5

As I mentioned the other eve, I'll be canceling my Mastodon account later today. No big deal, I know, but I mention it for those few who might want to keep in touch. And also you can always reach me through the authorized website, the person who runs that forwards me email through their contact form: https://john-shirley.com/

I feel like we need some kind of rule for elections and primaries that says if you are going to publicly question and deride the results and refuse to concede you need to promptly (within 6 months) take your concerns to court and after that contradicting the results from recounts and court disqualifies you from future participation in the process.

If the process is fake and broken explain it, fix it, expose it. Or shut up and leave.

Warnings grow about risky IV drips and injections at unregulated med spas

Infectious disease and ER doctors say they are seeing more severe infections and other injuries associated with the facilities, which can operate with little oversight.

The Food and Drug Administration warned last month about reports that consumers developed severe infections and skin deformities after they got unauthorized shots touted to dissolve fat at med spas across the country.

This is why I'm leaving Mastodon on Jan 2. "Some of your posts have been found to violate one or more community guidelines and have been subsequently removed by the moderators of wandering.shop." I disagreed with some on trans nomenclature. I felt that cis was often used as a slur rather than as a category. It had gone from category to slur. For example this was removed: "It's how cis is used now that concerns me. I'm LGBTQ myself. I lived with a trans gf ...I support all trans rights." That!

johnshirley2024,

Anyway when this latest wave of covid has died down (though I am fully multiply vaccinated) I intend to do more volunteer work. I do that as a literacy volunteer to help people learn to read in prisons and elsewhere, and I help out at foodbanks. So I'll need more time away from social media for that.

johnshirley2024,

Things I SUPPORT:

All rights for women, including a woman's right to choose.

Reparations for Black Americans & Native Americans. An end to all Confederate memorials. An end to all racist policies. An end to environmental racism.

Trans rights in every respect. I support them all. LGBTQ+ rights.

Socialized medicine.

Separation of church and state.

Free higher education.

LGBTQ+ openly in the military.

Strict environmental regulations & an end to polluting industry.

Democratic socialism.

johnshirley2024,

@lienrag Couple years ago at mastodon.cloud I objected to someone, who claimed to be an anarchist revolutionary, calling for liberals to be killed. I certainly don't object to anarchist revolutionaries ...but calling for liberals to be killed? So I reported this person which got me some pushback from an admin guy of some instance who called me a liberal handwringer & I was banned.

NEWS: My anti-fascist cyberpunk trilogy, A Song Called Youth: Eclipse, Eclipse Penumbra and Eclipse Corona, will be out in a new and print on demand edition from Open Road Media early in 2024. The Dover edition has recently gone out of print but--these books, warning of deepfake tech & a resurgence of neofascism and an American theocracy, and predicting much that has happened, have never been out of print long. For now, used copies are easily found.

On Prime you can find I MARRIED A WITCH (1942), with Veronica Lake -- directed by the French auteur Rene Clair. It's based on a novel by Thorne Smith (Topper, etc) and is very witty and though released post-code surprisingly sexy. Remarkably good special effects for the time. Delightfully wicked witches. Wonderful costumery, wry twists...

Israeli media derides ‘worst government in history’ on its anniversary

“Terrible and bloody: the worst government in the history of Israel marks a year,” wrote journalist Ben Caspit in the Maariv newspaper. Yossi Verter wrote in his weekly column in Haaretz: “On the anniversary of this failed government, the public is united in wanting to see its leader go.”
