Not to be a bummer to all of my new followers but my husband found out on Thursday that his job pushed his start date to Jan 2024.

So me and my small agency business have to keep supporting us for many more months than expected. And somehow move to NYC and afford the rent there…

Anyway. Feeling pretty lost. All the Twitter excitement is a lovely distraction but the scary uncertainty is very much in the back of my mind…

Not asking for anything. Just wanted to vent.

It feels like the world is ending from every possible direction.

Maybe you feel like your world is ending too. And neither of us benefits from putting on a fake smile and keeping on as if we aren’t dealing with deep, existential, debilitating fear.

So here’s an uncomfortable question: does work even matter during an apocalypse?

I try to answer it in my recent newsletter: https://admd.substack.com/p/marketing-at-the-end-of-the-world

wow the CEO AMA is a PR disaster. He is avoiding most of the questions, not mentioning the upcoming moderator protest, and completely refusing to take any responsibility or budge down on their controversial decisions.

I love Reddit and don't want to see it die but unless their leadership changes course... it's going straight into the internet graveyard.

Technology is always a reflection of the society that invents or produces it.

For example, when my mother was trying to buy a dishwasher in Manila back in 2016, she walked around every major electronics store with no luck.

Why? Because in the Philippines, if you could afford to buy a dishwasher, you were rich enough to hire household help.

And with so many poor people who need those types of jobs, if you could afford a maid and didn’t hire one - you were viewed as a greedy, selfish jerk.

Has anyone in my audience read the piece by The Verge? https://www.theverge.com/features/23931789/seo-search-engine-optimization-experts-google-results

If so, what did you think?

Full disclosure: I'm preparing to write something about it, so this is for helping me clarify my thinking.

Developers and anyone working in :

What do you like to read for work or in your spare time? (That's related to your job or code more generally). Trying to get a list of content that's actually good and read by real people vs propped up by algorithms.

Send links if possible or give names of sites / blogs / creators.

Thank you!

My first via is now live!

I talked about , mental health, , and emotional resonance.

Sometimes, failure feels like the safest option. Our present might suck and our pain might be unpleasant, but it’s familiar. We know how much our reality hurts. But a better future? That’s strange, new, and uncertain.

And nothing is scarier than fear of the unknown.

Hi, hello. I found my new favorite article 👀

“to reduce what Johnson calls his “biological age.” That system includes downing 111 pills every day, wearing a baseball cap that shoots red light into his scalp, collecting his own stool samples, and sleeping with a tiny jet pack attached to his penis to monitor his nighttime erections. Johnson thinks of any act that accelerates aging—like eating a cookie, or getting less than eight hours of sleep—as an “act of violence.””

The more I learn about of the Soviet Union, the more I realize just how much my native was actively stifled, prevented from developing and innovating, and forced into this image of a backwards and hopeless nation.

Our people have always been so phenomenal, talented, ambitious, kind, and creative. But they’ve been punished, scared, and intimidated into a terrible subservient existence for so many decades and centuries.

I love Ukraine, but god history is unfair.

I’ve seen a lot of apocalyptic thoughts on my timeline and in the “Trending” feed lately.

I guess it’s time to bring back the piece I wrote in June as Canada was also burning, Trump was getting charged with crimes, my native Ukraine was facing increased attacks, and the tech world was melting down all around me.

Look: while I talk about marketing in particular, many of my points will apply to anyone posting on the internet or creating anything for the public.

Had a long chat with a client about business relationships, especially when they get close enough to become personal.

They said:
“Treat finding a business partner as if you are finding a partner to marry. There will be ups and downs, but in a healthy marriage, the couple can always communicate”

(1/ )A year ago, I changed my career forever.

After months of working as a freelance content writer, I didn’t have much to show for myself. No bylines under my own name. No reputation.

For most in the B2B marketing world, Mariya Delano didn’t exist.

But I was too scared to publish anything on my website, because it already got some traffic from posts that I commissioned some other writers to create. Posting on the site felt like a lot of pressure.

What bothers me about a lot of this new 2020s internet (especially on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram) is the fake “authenticity” of it all

Accounts that fake street interviews

Fake pranks

Fake vlogs with staged conflicts

These people learned that audiences enjoy authenticity and unpolished raw human stories.

But instead of trying to be genuine in the stuff they publish… they copy the aesthetics of authenticity and lose the soul.

It just feels so wrong and off-putting to me.

Question for y’all: what’s your favorite website?

Bonus points if it’s a smaller or more niche website that most people wouldn’t know about.

mariyadelano, to mastodon
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

Alright. Sitting down to try and write an essay about all this.

How in the word do I tell a coherent story about how:

  • suspended me for no reason
  • I was bored on so ended up covering a Russian coup all last weekend
  • Got back on LinkedIn thanks to making noise RIGHT as they changed their algorithm
  • and the very next weekend decided to die
  • is there too. Decent memes, I guess

See you in 50,000 words? 😅

@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

Okay. I know exactly why is taking off.

It’s a stripped down version of Twitter that reminds people of what it used to be like….

BUT WITHOUT ADS

People coming from Twitter and Instagram think Threads is such a nice experience because THERE ARE NO ADS RIGHT NOW

They are not used to that. So they think is exceptional.

Zuck will start running ads once everyone is hooked.

Okay, Google just handed me the most perfect example for showing what I mean when I talk about cookie-cutter, bland, forgettable

A new blog post showed up on the search results page next to one of my own, both reviewing the exact same software. So... let's see how different it is to mine?

(Removing their website name because hating on them in particular isn't the point)

Anybody here into simulation games - what do you find appealing about them? Why do you like playing them?

(Simulation is my favorite genre, so curious to see whether the reasons I’m drawn to it are similar for others!)

This includes games like The Sims, Civilization, Animal Crossing, Truck Simulator, anything by Kairosoft, etc.

This LinkedIn comment section is making me feel insane.

The poster is angry (rightfully so, I think) about a pretty bad cold email. I got the exact same email too, and this post validated my own annoyance.

But the comment section is attacking the post author?? Saying she doesn’t respect sales??

What is happening????

I’m not one of those people who are afraid of doing math. I’ve done advanced math classes and I was a physics major for two years in undergrad, I’m not scared of math as a concept.

But yet the second I see a spreadsheet for any kind of financial calculations my brain blanks out and fails to process anything I’m looking at and I feel very stupid.

Sincerely, a business owner who is having to put financial projections together because I’m about to get acquired oh boy.
