What's the difference between a human stealing your work or #AI?
There isn't one. #Plagiarism is always done by humans when they take credit for the work of other humans.

Think of AI as a high-tech blender. A blender doesn’t create anything new. It simply puts some pre-existing substance in a different form.

If you make a carrot smoothie, can you say that you grew those carrots? The same could be said for #content created with AI.

I’ve been dealing with some big news behind the scenes the past two weeks - I got an acquisition offer for my agency. I am currently pursuing it, although I am not 100% decided.

It’s been a weird trip of realizing very different futures of my business to what I previously thought possible. No matter what happens - I think 2024 is already shaping up to be a very interesting year.

Also, I was wearing my shirt backwards the whole time during the acquisition offer call. 😅

I do not understand why people / companies are choosing to train their own chatbots based on their content. (As in, “here is YBot, trained on all the content that we published for our Y site / Y publication / our social posts”

Like… what’s appealing about this? Both for people who’d use the chatbot and even more so for those who make those chatbots?

Why do you want to have an LLM trained on your own data? How does that help you?

“Accept the reality that AI will destroy creative careers” sounds an awful lot like “accept the reality that crypto and NFTs are the future of commerce”

In both cases we see:

• Hype driven by companies and investors with vested interest in said technology
• Grand predictions of the future and comparisons to disruptions like the internet
• Obscure, complex tech that most people don’t use
• Extreme resource consumption for tech to function
• Fear and panic from media

How do you teach somebody to check if something is negotiable or not?

I don’t mean the skill of negotiation itself. But rather the awareness that when someone says something to you, you realize that it’s probably subject to change and you can begin negotiating with the other party.

For example, my freelancers often simply accept rates or deadlines when I’m trying to figure those out together in a way that works best for all. So I literally tell them “you know this is negotiable, right?”

The Verge asked “who ruined the internet”, and pinned the blame on SEOs.

I don't blame the Verge for falling into this trap. When they see us (SEOs), they see the people who work in explicitly helping businesses make money online. And they see our role in commercializing the web all too clearly, while missing the other parties who may have also played a part.

But why are we looking for anyone else to blame?

I’m writing to fight for what I believe in. For the internet. For my industry. For good ideas. For good people who want to do good in the world.

Technology is always a reflection of the society that invents or produces it.

For example, when my mother was trying to buy a dishwasher in Manila back in 2016, she walked around every major electronics store with no luck.

Why? Because in the Philippines, if you could afford to buy a dishwasher, you were rich enough to hire household help.

And with so many poor people who need those types of jobs, if you could afford a maid and didn’t hire one - you were viewed as a greedy, selfish jerk.

I lost a deal with a dream client last week.

I’ve… been struggling to recover from that. My self-esteem is still shattered, and I don’t know how long it will take me until I feel confident enough to get on another sales call.

And that doubt brought back an old nemesis - “the dread". An awful feeling in the back of my mind. My brain reminding me of my trauma.
