To those saying that Hamas, alone, is at fault for Gaza's plight

Hamas may have committed war crimes on Oct 7.

The whole point of international law is to bring all parties to account.

Holding Hamas, alone, responsible, but not Israel, is tantamount to supporting Israel's genocide.

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@DrALJONES I guess I’ll earn the ban. Israel is attacking Hamas, who is using human shields, which is an ongoing war crime. Of course the civilian casualties are horrific, but should Israel not retaliate against its enemy to protect itself, because the enemy terrorists use human shields, and risk another 10/7?

I've got a django management command that uses python logging to output info.

How can I capture that output with pytest? I've tried a StringIO context manager for stdout with a root logging handler to the console πŸ€”

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@markwalker pytest has built in functionality to capture logging. https://docs.pytest.org/en/7.1.x/how-to/logging.html . Logging plumbing can be difficult but this should work. Also, the β€˜pytest-django’ module may help but I’m not sure it’s required.

My mind has been obsessed with this video all day! So well laid out how our two parties became one since the 80s and 90s.

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@SeattleSanchez @actuallyautistic the two parties are nothing alike.

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@SeattleSanchez @actuallyautistic I think this guys right about republicans but so wrong about democrats. Change is hard and democrats are a large tent party of all non fascists and if anything a few members are too timid to do difficult political things because the right is so good at whipping their followers into a frenzy and violence.

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@SeattleSanchez @actuallyautistic Most democrats are for a lot more progressive change but that change requires a super majority (plus padding) in Congress to implement. Or republicans could stop being obstructionist clowns but that seems unlikely.

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@SeattleSanchez @actuallyautistic I did understand the argument in the video; I just think it's conspiratorial nonsense.

I think the real issue is that people don't fully grasp the workings of Congress and how difficult it is to pass meaningful legislation, especially when one party is hell-bent on blocking that progress, especially when the electoral system biases things towards that obstructionist party.

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@sal @SeattleSanchez @actuallyautistic I think democrats definitely want to help all classes but admittedly could do better at talk and actions for specifically for working class folks. Although this argument somewhat ignores the things they already do; Biden recently joined the auto workers strike in an unprecedented act of support for Union labor.

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@sal @SeattleSanchez @actuallyautistic Semi-agree. So let’s vote democrats (since they are the best option that can win) while pushing them to do better and making an effort to elect more progressives in local and state elections (through voting and/or volunteering).

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@theaardvark @sal @SeattleSanchez @actuallyautistic apologies. I didn’t start the thread.

So if I’ve understood correctly, a Colorado district court found that Trump engaged in insurrection and that the First Amendment did not protect his inciting speech at the Ellipse on January 6. But he can still be on the ballot in the state because (checks notes) the Presidency is not an β€œoffice of the United States” and that the president is not an β€œofficer.” That is certainly an odd thing to conclude. If the President is not an officer, who the hell is?!

Minnesota Supreme Court justices appeared skeptical Thursday that states have the authority to block former President Donald Trump from the ballot, with some suggesting that Congress is best positioned to decide whether his role in the 2021 U.S. Capitol attack should prevent him from running.

@Free_Press Of course Congress is. It’s right there in the amendment! The automatic disqualification can be waived if two thirds of Congress agrees.

Decided to look up USA's next Speaker of the House. First thing I find is he's a staunch gun advocate for "the right to bear arms".

Then I look at his X, and I see him first of all making a strawman accusation that "the left is justifying" the Hamas attack (truth is we condemn the war crimes of Hamas, and do not condone the occupation).

Then he goes on to unilaterally support Israel "to win this war". He doesn't want an end to bloodshed like "the left". He wants Israel to win.

mdylanbell,
@mdylanbell@fosstodon.org avatar

@ned he’s not speaker yet, but he is the nominee from Republicans who have a small majority. However, their majority is so small they also need votes from democrats or about 8 Republican members who are basically circus performers that seem to exist to say no and cause chaos.

Genetic testing firm 23andMe has suffered a data breach.

1 million data points exclusively about Ashkenazi Jews have been advertised for sale on a cybercrime forum. There's also information about hundreds of thousands of users of Chinese descent.

It appears to be a credential stuffing attackβ€”where previously leaked logins and passwords from other sites are tried on 23andMeβ€”with the attackers then scraping data from profiles

@lhn's story has all the details we know so far:

    Having a Smart TV is fucking awful. Every time I switch the HDMI between my Analogue Pocket, my Switch, or our Steam Deck, there's an apparently unskippable 40 second "Detecting device…" screen which never detects the device, after which I have to manually turn on Game Mode because there's no way to tell it "HDMI 1 uses Game mode. never disable this", every time you plug in a device is a completely new world
