To those claiming that climate scientists are perpetrating a hoax to get rich off grant money, let me tell you about fossil fuel subsidies…

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

@davidho We need to stop subsidizing the destruction of the planet.

Once fossil fuels are no longer subsidized, once they include the true cost of the environmental destruction they cause, they will stop seeming "cheap".

Carbon capture does not appear to be a viable mitigation measure for climate change.

It's not an efficient use of energy or resources, as it's failed to meet it's targets every single time it's been tried. Yet, every plan for "NET zero by 2050" relies on this.

The "NET" part depends on there being SOMETHING that's taking CO2 out of the atmosphere - but there isn't and likely won't be. The only viable method of carbon capture is to keep it underground.

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

The conclusion we can draw is that current plans and forecasts for emissions reductions are unrealistic, and will not be achievable even if every measure proposed is taken.

So, in my opinion we're most likely going past the 1.5-2C "limits".

As such, we should be focusing on understanding and developing resiliency to the new climate we will have to adapt to, instead of attempting to preserve "business as usual" as if nothing was changing around us.

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

"But how can we know that Carbon Capture doesn't work?" - Because we've tried making it work for decades with no success.

Here's some examples:

If reaching "Net" Zero relies on these systems working, then evidently we will not reach it.

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

There is no "net" zero - there is only zero emissions, once we stop burning oil, gas, and coal. And we need to get there as soon as possible.

"investors are looking for companies that can reach billion dollar valuations" - ok, but what if, instead of that, you looked for companies that are profitable, sustainable and offering a valuable good or service.

what if instead of amassing money you tried to do good.

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr I'm thinking about this from the point of view of an individual investor - what would I want to do with my money.

Buy yeah, @ponquecitos just pointed out to me that investment manager are legally forced to seek to maximize profit.

Which is insane, IMO.

Recently @Bellingcat published some research on a photo of what's reported to be the "oldest solar panel", installed in a New York City rooftop in 1884.

For future reference: To set up a Raspberry Pi Zero 1.3 to use SSH via USB:

add an empty ssh file into rootfs

edit config.txt to include "dtoverlay=dwc2" at the last line

add "modules-load=dwc2,g_ether" after "rootwait" in cmdline.txt

when connected, assign it a static IP using:

sudo ifconfig devicename [ip] netmask 255.255.255.0

And... that should be it.

After running raspi-config the empty ssh file might be deleted, so you will need to re-create it directly on the SD card.

BTW, this is a country with the highest percent of solar in the mix.

mzedp,
@mzedp@mas.to avatar

@unnameduser @jackofalltrades That's not true. Solar panels can operate between 25-30 years. It takes between 1 and 4 years for a solar panel to produce as much energy as it took to produce it (and that number is decreasing).

So, they are CO2 positive. They pay back the energy used to make them, and then some.

    @guacamayan @doktorzjivago tbh, I think this will be the saving grace for mastodon in the long run. What made twitter great wasn't that there were celebs and funny memes, but that Serious People™ used it to discuss Serious Business.

    Right now, Mastodon has clearly emerged as the new platform for Serious People™, and in the long run this will attract politicians and journos, and everyone else.

    A lone photograph claims to show the first instalment of a rooftop solar panel. Bellingcat researcher @FP explores whether this historic photo was potentially altered and the invention attributed to the wrong man. https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2023/08/16/untangling-the-mystery-of-the-worlds-first-rooftop-solar-panel/?utm_source=mstdn

    @Bellingcat Thanks for sharing! I actually have quoted the Smithsonian as proof that the first image showed a "Charles Fritts Solar panel in the 1880s", and had looked into the Cove/Fritts controversy.

    I had NOT seen that image showing the rooftop panel tilted, which clearly shows that it's composed of various small elements - consistent with Cove's design (thermoelectric generator composed of many small cells).

    Fritt's solar cells were different, flat sheets of selenium and gold.

    I was not expecting Sellotape to make me ponder the definition of “plastic” today. But my departmental stationary cupboard has “zero plastic sellotape” (similar to Scotch tape, if you’re from the USA).

    Plant-based things can be made non-biodegradable, bamboo fabric being the obvious eg - it’s rayon, which contribute to plastic marine waste & doesn’t decompose. And this “zero-plastic” tape will only compost in an industrial composter.

    If it looks like plastic and quacks like plastic…

    mzedp,
    @mzedp@mas.to avatar

    @helenczerski In terms of plastic pollution, it's not great, but at least it's not made out of petroleum.

    It is despicable that the Covid vaccine manufacturers are going to charge more than $110/dose for the new XBB.1.5 boosters when available in mid-September.

    The US government previously paid ~$25/dose, supplied free of charge, and subsidized these companies with untold $ billions.

    @erictopol I guess the scientists behind these developments don't have as much freedom as Mr Salk had to do what they want with the intellectual property - but one would hope they'd leak it to let other people use it.

    I don't know how to describe it but this post 2016 society has kinda broken me in a way that I can't describe. Yes, I get it, "Lol things have always been bad" blah blah blah, but this dystopian shit is something different. I think the combination of just seeing how comfortable people have become just being outright cruel and bigoted combined with the apathy and just flat out resignation of folks who may be decent, but they've just normalized all of this bullshit killed my youthful spirit.

    Ever wondered why every animal doesn't evolve a complex, flexible, problem solving brain like humans? Brains are expensive.

    The brain, unlike any other organ, runs only on sugar. Thinking hard requires more glucose than relaxing & zoning out. When you are asked to do a thinking task & say "I'm too tired" -it's real!

    ~20% of calories go to the brain. If a rabbit wanted to expand its gray matter it would need more food-- being a little smarter doesn't always translate into better survival.

    mzedp,
    @mzedp@mas.to avatar

    @futurebird I heard a theory that the brain didn't evolve to maximise survival, but simply as a form of hypertrophy to attract mates, kinda like peacocks feathers.
