Reminder!

Be patient with the , especially the next few days.

Half of is about to go dark (tomorrow).

We have Fediverse-friendly alternatives here, and , maybe others ...

And they're about to experience a weird version of the Reddit ... perhaps Mastodon and the whole Fediverse, too.

Servers, moderators and admins may all be overwhelmed.

nattiegoogie, to Facebook

I said this before, but clearly, it needs a stand-alone toot.

trying to join the is

...Russia asking to join NATO.

...Exxon asking to join Greenpeace.

...The Big Bad Wolf offering to help you build your wolf-proof house.

This is not rocket surgery.

The whole reason people built the Fediverse was to get away from the way of Internetting.

Never let them join our club.

meg, to random

The more "popular" the Fediverse is becoming, the less interested I am in using it.

We complain a lot about mainstream social media companies (as we should), but most people don't realize that the biggest problem is how they have been able to manipulate everyone into believing that a growth-mindset (more followers, engagement, reach) is actually beneficial to the self.

In doing so, they've spurred on addiction and trained the public into being promotional content farms for them. Resist that.

nattiegoogie,

@meg

Also, too much focus on the fear that the #Fediverse will get chopped up into isolated clusters, not talking to each other.

I think that's perfect.

We've already got that. Somewhere out there is a whole 'nother Fediverse, full of nazis and pedophiles and foul-mouthed 4chan trolls ... and they're (I assume) happy there.

If 95% of this Fediverse decides to federate with Facebook, I'm fine with being in the left-over tiny-server isolationist group, and fuck the rest of ya.

nattiegoogie, to random

So ... I've been in IT for 20+ years, most of that time working directly in databases.

That whole thing about Twitter, FB, Reddit, Google, whoever ... "deleting" your data after you jump thru the right hoops.

That's all bullshit.

I mean, even apart from the whole "market, monetize, sell and spy on our userbase" thing.

DBAs, people who actually work with databases, we almost never actually delete stuff in a database.

Yeah, I've got 20+ years of "sweeping back the ocean" under my belt. Longer with Climate Change.

I used to think we weren't saying it right.

Now I understand that human nature is simply too...'reactive', I guess.

Most people do not feel the urge to fix something until it is clearly a Big Fuckin' Problem.

That "frog in boiling water" thing is literally going to wipe out Humanity, probably soon.

Maybe ants will plan their future better.

...wow...that was more bitter than I expected.

So, I use both the #uMatrix and #NoScript plug-ins in my #Firefox browser, which lets me filter out most scammy spy-crap (and ads).

But they also show me websites in a way most people never see. I see exactly what kinds of crap the creators felt okay with sticking into the site.

Literally 99.9% of sites use Google Analytics, Fonts.GoogleAPIs, GoogleTagManager, and/or the Gstatic library. I never allow any of them, and guess what?

99% of those sites work just fine w/o 'em.

I just noticed that her home website, kytrinyx.com is now a blog being run by a guy named Manuel Poynter, with no reference whatsoever to her or her work, and all links to her stuff there just redirect to the home page.

Passing thought for trans folk, gender fluid, non-binary, etc.

In the Hungarian language, all pronouns are gender neutral.

ő == he or she
őt == him or her

OTOH, most Hungarians (at least outside of Budapest) are still pretty old-school in their views on gender identity.

If they can be restored, then they were never really deleted in the first place.

Article in The Verge today.

"A Twitter bug is restoring deleted tweets"

https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/22/23732497/twitter-bug-restoring-deleted-tweets-retweets

Obviously, Twitter is not the best example—especially lately—of a well-run IT company. Nonetheless, it is now an example illustrating my point last month, that IT companies rarely actually delete your data, even when they say they do.

Watching @aral et al rage against the machines, this has been on my mind for awhile.

Bear with me.

Corporations are not evil.

They are constructs; artificial life forms defined and designed by us, just trying to survive in an artificial ecosystem we created for them.

When we see "evil" corps rise to the top, and "good" corps go bankrupt...that is just an indication that we have designed them poorly.

A bad algorithm.

We do not need to "fight evil corps".

We need to redefine what a corp is.

A space elevator is inching closer to reality https://www.freethink.com/space/space-elevator

nattiegoogie,

@black_intellect

There are actually many other "alternative" technologies that look—at least on paper—much more feasible than a space elevator. Some could almost definitely be built today, with no magical tech or unobtainium.

My favorite is launch loops.

The problem is they are all cheap per pound, once built, but they have huge start-up costs ... require a whole new Apollo program.

And we already know rockets work.
