Here's a brainteaser for you.

Let's say I block or mute @fred

They then perform an account transfer and port their account to @freddy

All of their followers automatically follow the new account.

Does my account automatically block/mute their new account?

@Edent I don't kbow - but since when people move to a new instance I appear to already be following, I would assume the block remains, too.

Criminalising drug use helps no one.

It separates families, gives users a criminal record, removes access to (many) jobs. It is also inequitable, gaming hardest on the poor, people of colour, and others who are unable to access legal representation.

This is a horrendous situation to be in. The deep sea is a huge & biodiverse wilderness. These nodules can take two MILLION years to form. We absolutely do not need minerals from the seabed - battery designers are designing them out - and it will be almost impossible to monitor the significant damage that mining would cause. We must say no.

It might be worth trying!

Threads

I know it will irk some of you that some of us have Threads accounts.

My heart is with open protocols and Mastodon.

But.

The reason I do legal commentary is that I think promoting the public understanding of law is a good thing.

As such the wider reach the better - a public good.

I am also a writer, and the wider I can cast links to my Substack which provides financial means for me to justify using time for commentary, the better for me, as a private good.

I am sorry to irk.

Apparently they just announced my asteroid (yes I really do have an asteroid named after me and it's one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me!!) at the conference dinner, and I'm feeling even more sad that I couldn't go in person. SIGH.

But I have an asteroid named after me :) And I can watch all the talks online, which is pretty nice. And I didn't have to fly or figure out childcare or farm-sitting (or dump it all on my partner), so I guess this is fine.

🆕 blog! “Your phone is probably a CDO”

I'm not sure how many people know this, but I thought I'd share something I learned a few years ago when I worked for a mobile phone seller. Most modern smartphones are too expensive for people to purchase outright. At the most extreme end, the iPhone 14 Pro Max costs £1,2001. So a typical customer […]

I want to expand more on the comedy of errors that led to the eviction of #Twitter from their Boulder, Colorado office.

The story that leads up to this building even existing is bizarre and hilarious, so here goes...

Getting this one in just under the wire!

Computer scientist and engineer Tim Berners-Lee was born in 1955. He proposed a global hypertext experiment at CERN in 1989 and now we all live in it.

So you can blame all of this [waves arm in the direction of the web] on him.

Is there anyone serious who is saying this? Or is this just another way to make the tech seem more powerful than it is?

I don't get this "we're all gonna die" thing at all.

I do get the "we are too disorganized and greedy to integrate new technology well without the economy getting screwed up and people suffering... but that's another matter..."

But for a long while, Badenoch and her supporters in the European Research Group – and not forgetting Rishi Sunak himself, who made it part of his leadership manifesto – clung to the idea that wrecking the economy was a symbol of national pride. A Brexit bonus worth the cost. The right of the country to self-harm couldn’t be passed up."

The drone attack seems pretty fake. But the best case for it not being fake is how ineffective of a propaganda tool it would be. One would hope Russia’s propagandists would be more savvy. A bully wants everyone to feel sad they got bit back? Really? Consider moral boost either way. Either Russia is hitting herself desperate for sympathy— or a tiny nation pulled off something incredible. Win win for Ukraine.

I don’t really care who was responsible. If Mr Putin dislikes it he can easily LEAVE.

patrickhadfield,
@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot avatar

@futurebird I can't believe it was a "false flag" operation, because it makes Russia look so weak - would they really choose to look so vulnerable?

My guess is it was undertaken by Ukraine sympathisers or an anti war group within Russia. But frankly I know FA about it so your guess is as good as mine!

So I had to crack down on all the fictional "going to the tavern" and "drinking alcohol" in the middle school D&N club today.

They complained that their characters are "all over 21" (never mind what the drinking age is in their strange steampunk, noir, fantasy forest world... ) anyways I explained that they might get "fictionally drunk" so they dropped it.

Some day they may think back on that one and go "now wait just a min!"

patrickhadfield,
@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot avatar

@futurebird when a student, I worked in a theatre. It was a club so it could be in a frankly dangerous building. It meant it could open its bar outside of normal licensing hours.

And it meant it needed someone to check people coming in were members.

That was me. A lot of people wanted to use the bar when pubs closed. I had to stop them.

I was always amazed that when I told people they couldn't come in, they'd accept it! Say something with enough authority and people accept it.
