I'm an older geek dad in the California bay area.

Please talk to me about #coffee , #puns , #infosec , #books , #scifi, #ttrpg, or other geeky topics.

I like cheesy 80s pop music, Rush, and GloryHammer. No apologies.

I've discovered #mastocats hash tag, and #mosstodon and #photography and they've all made this a much more humane place.

I like seeing the "slice of life" posts from real people. These kinds of moments are what connects us.

Pronouns: he/him

#Infosec, #nerd, #dad, older #geek.

Tl;Dr AI suggested adding glue to pizza to make the cheese stick. Sourced from 11 year old reddit post.

These are all good fun to mock until someone actually gets hurt taking these responses literally.

I'm torn. I've thrown my share of shade at s and the rush to shove "AI" into everything, and even what they do well, one can argue if it's worth the cost.

But I've seen some useful stuff too.

Riding in passenger seat in the car, looking at my phone, and some nearby car (a ) tried to Bluetooth pair with me.

It nominally had the owners's name in the pairing request. That's a and problem.

I denied the request, of course, but was really tempted to accept, then play "Baby Shark" out their speakers.

Another banger from @pluralistic . I don't know how he consistently keeps putting these out.

There are too many great lines for a single pull quote. Spend the 5 minutes, read the whole thing.

This is brilliant stuff about #aiArt #copyright and the nature of meaning.

Try resetting your password on Southwest airlines website.

It didn't reveal the requirements, until you try to submit, then it tells you which you failed, onesy twosy.

Space not allowed at all (tell me you didn't trust your input sanitization)

Non-alpha required, but can't be the first character.

Even the 's are on our side on this one. I had one create a fictional persona of an "average American" and it came up with a cisgendered midwest father of two, mildly conservative, that I could ask questions of. "He" fixes cars.

llama3-70b has internalized some of our more idealistic self-myths, of the US, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

Any building civil engineer tyoes out there who could opine on this?

Structurally, could you build a human habitation house out of name-brand Legos? Do they have enough structural strength? Would it be more or less earthquake safe than, say bricks(not very) or other materials?

How many layers thick would you have to make a Lego floor to support a 100 kg human?

Wife was talking to me about seeing geese with a single baby. I said "Oh the little one must be Ryan."

"Why Ryan?"

"Ryan Gosling."

"I walked into that one, didn't I?"

"Yes love, yes you did."

Ask your counter party to swear and say something disparaging about a famous political figure.

All the commercially viable, Internet facing ones, have guard rails for polite conversation.

Swearing will be our captcha, our human shibboleth.

I'd love to see in place for all Americans. Like others, I agree that taxing billionaires, companies, reducing military spending, and such would all be good sources. But to my untrained math mind, it still doesn't add up.

Order of magnitude: GDP ~20 trillion $/yr, Population 330 million.

Assume $10 /person / day. (Not enough, I know) But even that modest number would be over a trillion a year.

That's 5% of GDP to buy everyone a nice sandwich a day.

Not sure how we fund bigger goals.

No, interstitial pop-up, I will not be recommending your software to my friends, because: a) I'm not in the habit of chatting about SaaS products with my friends at all, but more importantly, b) you are interfering with my workflow while I'm trying to use your software for $thing and prompting me now is the worst experience you could provide.

Went to our local drug store last night to get some cold medicine. Store was almost empty. Only one checker. Get to cold isle and thing I wanted is locked up in the security cage. Press button, no body comes. Walk up to front, cashier can't leave front of store and manager is only one with key and "in the back doing money stuff".

Can you (cashier) get the key from manager? No, can't leave front. Does manager know I want to give you money? Yes. After 20 min, I left without purchase.

At the USS Hornet naval ship museum.

It's the one that picked up the Apollo astronauts when they returned to Earth.

The sense of history is intense. It's old, but solid. A floating city.

Mind blown seeing the Airstream trailer they retro fitted to be a mobile quarantine zone for the returning astronauts.

Seeing the cramped but efficient durability of things made to last, it's the opposite of

I worked food service in a previous life.

For the love of dog, if parents come in with an obviously hungry child, please bring the kid's food first. Or some bread sticks, or rice, or whatever you can.

I know servers are constrained by what the kitchen can provide, but...

Speaking for all parents everywhere (I'm totally authorized to do this) we will be incredibly thankful and tip well.

Not much less fun than a hungry kid when the parents' food comes out first.

Make each sensation a little bit stronger

Two of the biggest attack surfaces in are: confusing the data plane with the control plane (think buffer overflow to code execution) where attacker data is given control, and social engineering to convince an actor to do something unusual.

's elevate both of these to new heights. They are literally designed to facilitate both of these patterns.

Instructions and data to operate on are delivered together, and the instructions' phrasing can influence the processing.

Laying in bed, under comfy covers. The windows are open just a bit to let in a cool breeze and the sound of rain. For a brief moment, nobody needs anything from me, and there is nothing I have to do right now, but be. Had a nice dinner with the wife, kid got to do fun stuff this evening.

It's a tiny moment of joy
