I'm an older geek dad in the California bay area.

Please talk to me about #coffee , #puns , #infosec , #books , #scifi, #ttrpg, or other geeky topics.

I like cheesy 80s pop music, Rush, and GloryHammer. No apologies.

I've discovered #mastocats hash tag, and #mosstodon and #photography and they've all made this a much more humane place.

I like seeing the "slice of life" posts from real people. These kinds of moments are what connects us.

Pronouns: he/him

#Infosec, #nerd, #dad, older #geek.

Have you ever been laying around, and realized your arm was in a strange position, and it felt weird, so you try to move it into a more natural position, but now you're hyper aware of how you position your arms, and it all feels weird, so you start questioning whether you know how to have arms?

This also applies to breathing.

Someone more talented than I am needs to make the parody song "In the Zoom where it happens".

My wife came up with the phrase after hearing me hang up from a conference call at home.

"I want to be in the Zoom where it happens, the Zoom where it happens..."

Almost finished with audio book of "The Raven Tower" by Ann Leckie.

https://libro.fm/audiobooks/9781549115790?rf_code=lfm473963

But it looks like there is no sequel. Already read her "Ancillary" series and enjoyed that too.

Big fan of the "Murderbot Diaries" by Martha Wells, "The Broken Earth" by N.K Jemisin, and the "Children of..." Series by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

What should I read or listen to next?

New proposal. Any company that thinks LLMs can replace "creatives" and make reasonable business decisions should logically replace the CEO first. Biggest expense automated = biggest savings, right?

Save salary and stock options. Distribute to remaining employees.

More on AT&T nationwide mobile outage

Various media services are confused about this. Some are reporting 70,000 people out -- it's actually apparently the entire nationwide network, but that number of people have apparently complained officially so far on support forums I'm told. There are some reports that other mobile carriers are out, these are not true -- ONLY AT&T is out.

911 continues to tell people to use LANDLINES!

Dear California CPUC, do you understand now the risks that AT&T is trying to force down our throats by ending landlines?

This started an interesting discussion on a private discord, but also of us are , so I figured it would be good to reality check with the folks here.

What's the proper form of citation or reference for a now-trans artist's dead name work? Their previous name was the author, but the trans person is still alive and performing, but perhaps not that work any more. Which name would you cite?

Obviously, if one can ask the artist, go with their preference, but is there a standard practice?

pseudonym,
@pseudonym@mastodon.online avatar

@cavedueller

In my case it would have been to both give credit and provide a link to the lyrics for others to find, archived on a web site listing the dead name.

But both are interesting cases.

I like Sublime Text but I've been frustrated lately with limitations in its LSP implementation and it's always a little nervousmaking to be depending on a closed source program. Someone recommended as an alternative "Zed", which looks pretty nice albeit a little "baffling tiny icons everywhere". But then I looked in further and I'm not sure how open source it is plus it literally only runs on Mac. Their README links a tracking issue for Linux support, which was locked due to arguing. (1/3)

Our kid watching Superbowl asked "Dad, why is nobody wearing a mask?"

I don't understand why my pre-teen gets it, and the majority of the country doesn't.

Our personal risk appitite is moderate. We eat out at restaurants, and may go maskless outside, or even inside with a few friends. But at school, and pretty much any crowds, or inside public spaces, we .

Yeah, fogging glasses is annoying, but it seems a ridiculously cost-effective step in mitigating risk.

I saw one at a roadside tourist attraction mini zoo. The big cat (tiger?) Was behind chicken wire and a single strand electric fence wire. Content, but interestedly chuffing as the small humans squeaked running by.

The bear cat was in ... The Pit. Metal walls, sunk well below the ground. One could look down at it, but it was like Super Max Solitary compared to the tiger.

Closest living relative to the wolverine.

Do not mess with bear cat.

@palmoildetectives

This was many years ago, so memory is vague, but I doubt it. More likely the attractions were the draw and the profit was from food and concessions and such.

I just recall having never heard of a bear cat previously, and then looking up information about them later

Resist the urge to make temporary files with names like foo, foo2, foo3, foo.old, foo.old2, foo.new, newfoo2.old and so on.

Trust me. That which is new will become old. Your throw away scripts will become critical infrastructure.

Use meaningful names, even for temporary things, and have some sort of version control.
