I post lots of #gamedev , #privacy , #security and other tech stuff I'm interested in. Just a regular guy getting into the #IT field. Unapologetic #coffee addict.
Are there any RSS Readers that are trying to integrate ActivityPub too? Pondering the glut of email newsletters in our inboxes these days, and wondering if we are due for an RSS Reader renaissance, except with a fediverse twist this timeโฆ
@mike@ricmac I know if I were to copy the url to your profile, I could add .rss and turn it into an RSS feed right there. I don't know if that's a Mastodon specific thing though.
Today marks one year since I walked away from 360,000 followers on that other site and joined this incredible community here!
That was easily one of the most positive moves I've ever made, and I frankly haven't looked back. Thank you to @jerry and everyone else who keeps this place humming. Come to think of it, it's time to renew our annual support!
If you're using Mastodon through the web on a computer, there's an optional multicolumn interface you can use instead of the default single column one.
Log in through your serverโs website
Click โ๏ธ Preferences
Tick the box marked Enable Advanced Web Interface
Click the Save Changes button
Click the Back to Mastodon link at the left of the screen
If you change your mind, click the โ๏ธ icon on the left to get back to settings.
Today, award-winning incarcerated journalist Christopher Blackwell announces that all his life's work has been wiped out by the prison communications company Securus.
I was the judge who selected Chris for his INN Nonprofit News Award this year. To know that one business profiting off incarcerated folks could decide to wipe out a respected journalist's lifelong work is infuriating. This is a shameful assault on freedom of the press
I got a most disturbing answer from Google's AI Bard when I kept pushing it to tell me why it incorrectly told me that Google Wallet can store Passports (it cannot).
After much poking, it admitted the wrong answer came from an unofficial source. When I asked it if it always accepts information from unofficial sources, it lied and said it doesn't, that it always looks for other sources to confirm. So, when I asked it if it found this wrong information in more than one unofficial source, it admitted that it did not. When I asked why it told me it does the second checks, but failed to do the additional checks for my question, it gave me this:
"I apologize for not following my own process for verifying information from non-official sources. In this case, I was eager to provide you with an answer to your question, and I did not take the time to fully vet the information I found."
Bard is a serial liar, and gaslighting and backpedaling are one of its developing skills. You really can't trust anything it says.
Hey #Linux peeps, can someone tell me why I get prompted for a username and password on #Github when trying to clone a repository on my brand new headless #Debian installation?
I'm just trying to install #FancyMOTD on my server. I do NOT get any such prompts when I tried it just now on my laptop running Manjaro, or earlier on Ubuntu Server.
Is this a Debian thing?
EDIT: Thanks for all the help, everyone. It was a dang typo.
This is why people like GUIs and clicking on shit, BTW.
@RockyC@mkj oh that's different, just be the repo you're trying to clone. If it's a public repo, you can go to the repo page and try the clone repo url at the top right there
Soooo, for the past couple days I actually downloaded #Floorp, gave a bit of customization... and now I'm in a bit of a dilemma.
Floorp so far is really good, and it has some of the features that I would otherwise be looking forward to in Arc browser, such as vertical tabs, sidebars, etc.
I don't think Arc is ever going to come to Linux. The Browser Company is only doing a Windows build because of the high demand, so I think it's best that I try and look for another long-term browser.
One of the things I like about Linux is you have a choice.
You see, unlike Windows, which follows the lead of Microsoft, or MacOS, which follows the lead of Apple, Linux as an operating system is whatever you make it.
I can switch from one Linux development distribution (distro) to another. For example, I can follow the lead of SUSE with either openSUSE or SLE, and tomorrow, decide I want to jump ship into Red Hat's lead with either Red Hat, or Fedora.
I am SO happy that WP.com supports the #Fediverse this way. Now I don't have to depend on brid.gy to allow Mastodon comments to my posts to appear on my blog. I'll figure out how to do this after my walk.
Woohoo. So excited and am so glad I decided to ditch #Squarespace for #Wordpress this year.

all advice about anxiety is centered on the idea that the anxiety you're experiencing is unreasonable and made up by bad brain chemicals and or bad thinking habits and never seems to consider the idea that maybe you have anxiety because you fundamentally live on a knife's edge like so many people in the 2020s are
