Lots of game collectors are saying the hobby isn’t fun anymore.

I sympathize. Gone are the days when you could get a Saturn game at a garage sale for a song and a dance. We’re no longer in a time where you could get anything you want for cheap.

Here’s the thing. If you want to make this hobby work while staying on budget, it’s time to look at what the collectors are ignoring. And right now, that’s the original Xbox, PS2, Wii, and PC.

Look at the numbers for yourself. The price for the average SNES game is $45. Meanwhile, the price for the average Xbox game is $10.

“But the Xbox is not retro!” some people say.

First off, retro is in the eye of the beholder. I started gaming with an Atari 2600. Relatively speaking, Super Mario 64 is not retro compared to Yars Revenge.

But what are we kidding? The original Xbox came out in 2001. It is now 23 years old – it is older than some adults. And when you compare the console to its modern counterparts, there’s a big difference.

There were some bangers that came out for the Xbox too. Ninja Gaiden Black, Burnout: Revenge, and Panzer Dragoon Orta are still amazing. All these games can be had for less than the price of the average SNES game.

For how long will these games be cheap? Who knows. There’s a life cycle to video game collecting. I imagine that in 10 years, the price will start to skyrocket. But for now, they’re cheap as dirt.

Geometry Wars is good. Most of us agree on that. But have you ever tried Waves?

Back in 2015, I bought this game and I was simply blown away. After eight years away from PC gaming, I was stunned by how much gold was available at an affordable price. And believe me, Waves is solid 24 karat gold!

Waves is a lot like Geometry Wars but adds something neat: the ability to slow down time. What this means is that if any enemy gets a little too close to you, you can temporarily slow things down to make it easier for you to avoid them.

However, you can only slow things down for so long, and after you use it, you have to rebuild your time gauge. This gives Waves an added dimension of strategy.

What’s neat is that Waves is now free on Steam. Which is quite a deal because I paid for my copy – even if it was a pittance. Also, Waves is verified on Steam Deck. And yeah, I recommend this.

Hey , say I was writing a service worker that can fetch resources from multiple different sources (say, IPFS, or alternative endpoints, or…) that might not be the origin.

Even though there are many sources, there is always a chance that any given request eventually fails — after trying several of them.

What HTTP error code should the service worker return to the client if the request does fail?

It feels like a 4xx error. But which one? Or should I come up with a new one? 🤔

sn0n,

@rysiek probably, most likely, 404 or 408, or possibly , the 5s.. 500, 502, 503... https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Status

There’s this myth that classical composers are insular, and don’t listen to anything except classical music.

In reality, classical musicians approach other musical genres with their ear to the ground. They know what’s going on. They hear fresh new developments.

There’s a classical composer I follow, named David Bruce, who integrated vaporwave ideas into a composition. He doesn’t treat it as a novelty. And the result is a well-executed work.

Very soon, atomicpoet.org will no longer be my back-up Fediverse account. It will be my main account.

I’ll be migrating this server from Pleroma to Akkoma + Mangane (a.k.a. Akkomane). I’ll also be boosting this server’s capabilities to handle more volume.

You see, this current server is only running on a vCPU and 1GB of RAM. And still, it’s able to send messages to 2,119 followers. In terms of performance, that’s pretty good.

However, once my upgrade to Akkomane is complete, I’ll be migrating @atomicpoet over to this profile. Because that profile has 13,716 followers, it will require beefier hardware.

Why am I doing this? For one thing, it’s time for me to coalesce all my posting to a single server that I own, and is completely my identity down to the domain name.

But also, I strongly feel that someone with a big account should be demoing the possibilities with Akkomane – which I believe has the best combination of performance + UI/UX on the fediverse.

And if you’re curious about what Akkomane looks like before I fully upgrade, I suggest checking out @damon and @deadsuperhero ‘s Akkomane server. They’ve had it running for a couple weeks, and they seem to like it!

Here’s a link to their Akkomane profiles:

https://social.wedistribute.org/@damon

https://social.wedistribute.org/@deadsuperhero

I have further plans for Akkomane, but I’m being thorough with my testing before I announce more details.

To say I’m excited is an understatement!

I need some feedback on a test implementation of jwt token auth:

JWT tokens are valid forever, however we would like to invalidate all tokens when a user changes their password.

We've solved this by saving a random value at the user, and storing this in the token. Whenever the token is used, we check if this is the same. When a password gets changed, we also change this value, which then makes all old tokens invalid because they don't contain this value.

How does this sound to you?

sn0n,

@schizanon pages would be quite boring if everyone just said "working, relaxing & life maintenance" on their now page, I imagine the "objectives" style list is just a easy way to say "I'm working on these things currently as a life focus".

This is TERRIBLE security. Even the people who came up with this idea DECADES ago have said that it was a terrible idea. This only makes things LESS secure.

Good security is simple:
UNLESS you are a security expert, assume that literally every security related idea you have is terrible. ONLY do what security experts (!= experienced devs) CURRENTLY advise. And do it without alteration.
