How important is the problem of protesters chanting "from the river to the sea" on college campuses compared to the death and destruction in Gaza?

I don't think mobile providers provide email addresses today? Not in Canada at least.

But fixed line internet providers do. Which is kind of wacky when you think about it.

@evan has a poll on whether mobile phone companies should provide fediverse accounts https://cosocial.ca/@evan/111607888546585241

stinerman,
@stinerman@mastodon.social avatar

@boris @evan i think it comes from the days when email was not something you could just get from anyone. It was a value-add like USENET access and so forth.

Personally, I don't think ISPs should give you anything except a pipe and possibly DNS. Everything else should be up to the user.

Warning: Rant coming.

The doomsaying and cynicism in my comments over the past few days are annoying me.

I am addressing the people saying any form of: "Why won't the Supreme Court rule in Trump's favor?"

You are unhinged from the facts. Get a grip.

Here are the facts: Since Trump lost in 2020, the Supreme Court, and every other court, has consistently ruled against him in his immunity claims.

1/

stinerman,
@stinerman@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield i think the general vibe here is that you believe that the courts won't do things that are obviously crazy, like say the President is immune from prosecution for any acts taken while he was President. I don't think they will either, but some people believe they will because they've learned as of late that the Constitution says whatever 5 members of the SCOTUS says it says. There is no real check on them, so people are naturally concerned.

I'm just seeing the Rainbow Bridge news. I guess we will now get to learn what happens when this sort of news breaks in this post-Twitter-as-the-common-space era — and what we've learned about how to understand breaking-news reports in such situations. My rules: Be skeptical, wait, and don't share things that aren't clearly sourced and credibly confirmed.

@dannotdaniel @chrisgeidner it's not. "Rainbow Bridge" has multiple meanings and it's not clear from the context which one is being referenced.

I’ve been incredibly angry — furious, even for ME — about the most loathsome and contemptible defamation suit I’ve ever seen in my career, and now Mike Masnick at TechDirt has written about the despicable case and about my anti-SLAPP motion to dismiss it. Reading it just makes me angrier.

Anyway as an update to my Linux catastrophe earlier today,

After my roundtrip of "apt install fuse" "discover this actually uninstalls fuse3 and installs fuse2" "install fuse3, thus uninstalling fuse2" all these VERY important looking packages (all of qt6…?) now appear in apt autoremove as set for removal. What should I do about this, and how can I ensure my next apt autoremove doesn't remove critical system components existing software depends on?

stinerman,

@mcc was just gonna say if nautilus-data is in auto remove, I'll bet you don't have nautilus anymore.

“ CW us politics, please. “

No. I don’t CW actual news unless it’s gory or otherwise extremely disturbing.

This is why people leave Mastodon, (not me) folks.

I replied back that I don’t CW news and that they should mute me.

If I get kicked off my server for that, so be it. I’ll go to Threads or Bsky.

stinerman,
@stinerman@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff @yuki2501

  1. It is unlikely you will be kicked off m.s for not CWing US politics.
  2. If some rando asks you to, you are fully within your rights to ignore them unless they're an admin of the server you're on. If they are, find another instance. If they aren't mute them. The concept that people asking (in this case politely) for another person of the fediverse to do something is "why people leave Mastodon" beggars belief.

One year ago, I decided to leave Twitter and start my own Mastodon instance for myself and a few friends.

I quickly started supporting the project on Patreon and joined the Discord, to see if I could help some people with scaling up their instances, as I was familiar with the stack and I know the drill.

A few weeks later, I was reworking the whole hosting for the project, then mastodon.online, and ultimately mastodon.social…

"When he was 18, Mr. Shami watched “American Psycho,” the 2000 film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s shocking novel, which lingers on the murderous main character’s toned body and elaborate beauty regimen. Mr. Shami’s main takeaway from the film was not its mordant satire of consumerism, but that it was an aspirational lifestyle guide." The whole Mr. Beast phenomenon is so fascinating to me: "MrBeast is a first in a lot of ways. We’ve never had a creator get this big, this consistently viral, and be this digitally native before.
