The same law requires addition of voting equipment or polling locations based on line length of the previous election. In theory voter suppression by line length is a one-time deal. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in 2024.
@tristansnell The average gun owners are the ones that can break the blockages to gun legislation. The avg gun owner has family in school lock downs & active shooter drills at work & victims in the mass shootings. This is the opportunity to get very stringent background checks in place, convincing avg. gun owners to break from the propaganda of the firearm industry. They need to realize that there is no freaking empathy for humans from the firearm industry & their paid for legislators.
@tristansnell This should be a much bigger story. Current status is that the bond has been disputed (notice of exception) by the AG. Since Knight (bond company) is not approve in NY, this triggers the requirement for Trump/Knight to prevail in a motion that the bond meets surety requirements within 10 days (now 9). Expects say Knight will not meet NY surety requirements. If the motion fails the bond is void and collections can begin, and Knight is also still on the hook.
If it’d been ANYONE else, what Trump is accused of would’ve resulted in FBI search teams descending not just on Mar-a-Lago — but also on Bedminster and Trump Tower.
Immediately. And they wouldn’t have left any closets or secret rooms unsearched either.
@joeinwynnewood@Adventurer@tristansnell There are many ways to channel rage - violence, voting & protesting in the streets are a few. I don't think I said anything about violence. I didn't say anything about breaking the law. What I did say was to be angry & to act accordingly in ways that will protect this country (you, me & even MAGA) from fascism. If anyone thinks anger & even rage must always be suppressed, I'm sorry for you bec you will always be a "victim" of your own choosing. PeaceOut
I did not mean to imply you meant violence (though with large demonstrations, anarchists will inevitably take advantage as they did in 2020).
I also did not suggest anger should be suppressed.
I said directly, acting like those who are bent on destroying Democracy will make things worse, not better.
People inducing rage based on assumptions and crystal balls, pushing people to take undemocratic actions is not just counterproductive, it is flat out bad.
@tristansnell "If only there were something we could do..." /snark
There is always much talk of mental illness following these events, but of course every advanced country has people who are mentally ill, but they don't get mass shootings like the US does. So it must be something else, some way in which the US is not the same as other advanced countries.
The all too short answer is politics. The longer answer is that America and the world are very complex places with centuries of history that combine to generate all manner of perverse incentives and interactions.
In the middle of all that are a lot of people who lack much if any empathy as well as many who do. The latter have to fight the former in order to tend to those who need help. Sometimes we win that battle and we can, and then there's the rest of the time
A more direct answer to your resource allocation questions is that passing most legislation requires agreement or at least compromise across Parties.
Many on the right are philosophically against government assistance for individuals. They see everything around an individual's situation in terms of personal success or failure. Wringing social services resources out of them is very hard.
At the same time they are gung ho on machismo, cops & armies.
@bleakfuture@tristansnell That all tracks with me. But I think it comes into play when we try to scold others for ethics- we're all potentially ethically compromised ourselves.
@escarpment@tristansnell of course we have - but as a society we’ve deemed dogs friends and cows food. Some cows can be friends and some dogs can be food but not often for either.
There is no rhyme or reason for it - I’m sure dog is delicious and I don’t love the idea of cows being executed, but here we are.
The more interesting thing is the Noem puppy story will outrage more people than humans killing humans will.
@tristansnell
So what you’re saying is, we white men are not capable, or not willing, or both, to take him down ourselves? I mean, I’m all for teamwork and all, but he’s largely there because of us. Ok, I have to say it, not all white men, but c’mon, let’s be real here. Why is it so hard for white, non-MAGAt men to take care of him. What is his power? What is it about demagogues in general that gives them this power? And what is it about us that we are susceptible to this power?
It is a crime, though I don't plan on looking up the statute. That's why Kathy Griffiths got to spend time chatting with the Secret Service back when.
I was furious then with the people who complained about that at the time. And, yes, I think if Donald Trump has posted any such thing he should be hauled in for his own Secret Service interview.
