France/California. Water is my happy place (swimming, snorkeling, freediving, scuba...).

Professionally, I'm back to working in the Cloud/data/analytics space after an interesting parenthesis working on a large consumer product for a few years. Not speaking on behalf my employer (you can easily find me on LinkedIn if you want to know specifically which company I'm not speaking for).

It's nice how Kristi Noem's ghost writer and PR consultant was able to quickly rebound from the dog-shooting setback and get a job in Apple's marketing department.

The fact that you can follow the president of the United States (@potus) from your Mastodon account instead of being forced to have an X or Threads account for it is a huge W in my book. Of course our team is fully available to help if they'd want to set up Mastodon on whitehouse.gov. I believe governments should not rely on 3rd party platforms to connect with their constituents.

vambenepe,
@vambenepe@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron @potus Agreed (that it's nice and also that a gov instance would be even better).

Another (minor) benefit of a gov Mastodon instance is that the POTUS account there could have a join date that's not April 1st...

    Omegle is shutting down. From the founder:

    “I worry that, unless the tide turns soon, the Internet I fell in love with may cease to exist, and in its place, we will have something closer to a souped-up version of TV – focused largely on passive consumption, with much less opportunity for active participation and genuine human connection.” https://www.omegle.com/

    vambenepe,
    @vambenepe@mastodon.social avatar

    @taylorlorenz People have been worried about the internet turning into TV forever. This is from a 1996 article about PointCast (anyone remembers PointCast?).
    https://www.cnet.com/tech/tech-industry/pointcast-pushing-a-paradigm/

    vambenepe,

    vambenepe,
    @vambenepe@mastodon.social avatar

    @mattwilcox @taylorlorenz Not sure where "survivorship bias" plays here. Who am I ignoring who failed to survive because they fell into the trap of turning the internet into a passive consumption medium?

    It's perfectly reasonable to remain concerned about it (though for my part it's far from the main concern I have about the future of the internet), but let's not call any attempt to learn from history "survivorship bias".

    Identity and Democracy, a far-right political group inside the European parliament, has nominated Elon Musk for the 2023 Sakharov Prize. Identity and Democracy includes members of European Parliament tied to France's Marine Le Pen and Italy's Matteo Salvini. It opposes immigration and the spread of Islam.

    I keep saying that the dead bird site is dangerous. This is one more example. If you're giving your time and engagement to it, you're helping it to remain viable and encourage other rich megalomaniacs to buy public platforms.

    Did you know? The “ping” command, commonly used to test network connectivity, was developed by Mike Muuss in 1983 for BSD Unix and later became standard in Linux and other operating systems such as Windows and others. Check his Wikipedia page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Muuss and my page about ping command https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/unix-ping-command-examples/ examples for more info.

    I have only just recently looked up what the difference is between a federation and a confederation: roughly, in a confederation membership is voluntary, whereas in a federation it is not.

    The Fediverse is actually a confederacy…
