another on-premise bare-metal cluster build for 2024!

greater than five but fewer than ten Ampere Altra Q80-30 servers will be combined with Xeon based hosts of mostly-equivalent specs (dual-socket 8280 and E5-2697v4 hosts), 768GB - 1TB of RAM per each, and NICs w/ multiple 10, 25, and 100GbE ports depending on system role. switches are all Arista.

should be an enjoyable deployment!

today is the type of day where it's easy to forget about the ongoing treatment; the morning is calm and peaceful, mind and body feeling rested. refreshed.

ooh but then with minimal warning, enough time to hurry.... ok, that's everything ejected from the stomach including expensive irreplaceable medication... fine totally fine.

so that's one reason why I don't leave the house without sufficient planning.

Whoever said that waking up at 7am was productive? Feels like missing the most productive hours of the day entirely.

Business hours are too susceptible to flow-disruption comms:

  • Slack equiv desk walk-ups
  • adhoc zoom invites
  • email notes and webhook pings
  • random laggy RTT, oh it's just packet loss
  • cursing the sky-gods for recurring frustrations: "where tf is that fuckincablegoddamnusbstandardseverythingshouldbetunderboltffsโ€ฆ nothing works and I hate(love) these stupidstupid computers!"

Okay, so a few days ago, I made several posts about how I was pretty upset about Mastodon and the way a good chunk of the Fedi culture convulses from time to time.

Anyway, I'm dorking around on Bluesky this morning waiting for the caffeine to come online and I stumble across a post--now a fucking website--full of signs made as a direct response to the culture on the Fediverse I was talking about.

And they're absolutely damning.

It has already been possible to change an 's default web browser through the "Settings" app since iOS 14.

has a March 6 legal deadline to introduce app sideloading in the European Union in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act , and iOS 17.4 will add support for this. will allow Apple users to download apps outside of the App Store, but the change will be limited to customers in the EU.

Now is an opportunity to improve your web experienceโ€ฆ and your safetyโ€ฆ

winterschon,
@winterschon@hachyderm.io avatar

@maugendre easier to use the multi-container system in Firefox, where the logical function is exactly what you're describing (identity isolation by stateful process zone exclusion), without having to run unique browser applications.

I sometimes use multiple browsers, but much less often than beforehand.

i find the AI criticisms of Emily Bender & friends to be valuable, but theyโ€™re misquoted frequently to support arguments that AI is worthless. the papers themselves essentially just argue that the terms researchers use to talk about AI are misconstrued by the general public โ€” basically that AI went big too soon. they acknowledge in just about every paper that AI is quite valuable

winterschon,
@winterschon@hachyderm.io avatar

@kellogh Agreed, and that's fine.

The anti-Ai people can have their false sense of moral superiority and further self-segregate their feelings-driven social fiefdoms. That's a common trend during every decade, it simply shifts in expressions of outrage, and their voices become further marginalized by their own actions.

Most of them are unimaginative, stuck in the past, and fail to view positive potential of new technologies. Let them get passed by, it's what they deserve.

This comes up periodically, and is worth mentioning as often as necessary:

The claim that has superior features for service templating, eg has named variables and is self-documenting, is nothing more than an uninformed red-herring.

Sometimes people wade into areas and ask about replacing the RC system because they think it lacks similar variables and so on... if/when that arises a simple answer is to point them at the 'rc.subr' manpage:

My earliest experiences with sqlite were on ios, where it would frequently corrupt data, and android, where the slowness and apiโ€™s hostility to threading made everything painful. So I have sort of a visceral negative reaction to sqlite.

But when I look around at formats for storing sequences of structured data on disk without running a separate service, it seems like itโ€™s the clear choice. Should I give sqlite another chance?

winterschon,
@winterschon@hachyderm.io avatar

@zombierustpunk oh, but there are ethical reasons to dislike it as well! this made a bit of a hubbub a few years ago, but of course it's been going on since the 2000s.

The true achievement of has been missed by everybody and will be thrown away.

Many really enjoy and even need a closed, gated/invite-only, private, no-ads, no-algorithm, positivity/fun inclined social media space.

I suspect that much of the quality of the for many is accidentally building the equivalent through relative obscurity but without any necessary design/tech guarantees.

Thereโ€™s probably something to be learnt there, especially amongst all the angst.

winterschon,
@winterschon@hachyderm.io avatar

@maegul nah, all of those qualities will disappear as soon as the product is out of beta. oh, and don't forget that the bluesky users and associated data are the product, which would be for sale as soon as advertisers are let in, which is when it's out of beta.

nothing to learn from there that we don't already know about from the rest of the mainstream social media platform failures, other than to maybe stop wanting to trust jack dorsey and his cohorts.

winterschon,
@winterschon@hachyderm.io avatar

@goulien @Strandjunker It's not so simple to say they lived in denial, rather it's a case of "deny" vs "powerless to change". The citizens of those nearby towns were not sufficiently armed or capable of fighting or even resisting the SS.

You might as well ask yourself how you would shut down an ICE detention facility at the USA southern border... good luck with that. We have elections to ideally mitigate such things but reality is quite complicated.
