Moving to another Mastodon server?
Be sure to go to preferences, import/export and export you folloing list and whatever else is important to you first. Then, import that list when you've moved.
@phanpy, my favourite Mastodon web client, released a great new beta function: the catch-up window.
You can choose the time window you want to catch up on, and you get a nicely organised list of posts that you can browse by author, by whether it's an original, a boost, a reply, and order by date, replies, boosts, etc. All done with a very pleasant and intuitive design.
It's not a bad idea to check the bio of the person to whom you're replying if you're not mutuals/known to each other. Also there are ways to modulate tone to connote that you're agreeing emphatically rather than seeming to correct the OP. You have more characters here, make them work for mutually satisfying exchanges!
I’m noticing increased drive by commenting on here. Which, if you’re commenting on a cat pic? Sure, no problem.
But when someone toots on important topic and it’s been boosted and favorited a ton? That’s your clue to actually dive into the threads and see what’s going on.
Please, please, please don’t just drive by “react” to these posts. Your “reaction” is likely already discussed in the threads and it is terribly frustrating to back and address the duplicate comments — which have to be addressed lest someone else come by and see the unaddressed reaction and further react.
This destroys productive group idea generating discussion. Please digest the discussions and provide thoughtful replies based on what has been said in whole.
This isn’t twitter. We do better here. It’s ours. Please take the time to treat it with the respect it deserves.
If you want your posts to be visible, use hashtags. This is more important here than anywhere else, because there is no cross-instance full-text search. And people do follow hashtags.
In my experience well-hashtagged posts get half of their interactions from people who don't follow me.
Also, let me share a helpful #FediTips with all of you.
Instead of making a post and asking "Is Facebook/Instagram/Threads down?", simply click the link below and search for your platform of choice and it will provide the answer for you.
Muting/blocking is just as important as following. The algorithm used to do that for us, even though we thought of it as "serving" us content. The muting part was just, naturally, invisible.
This means that #mastodon requires a bit of housecleaning when you first move in. Advice: start early figuring out what content you're NEVER interested in seeing, and block 🚫/ mute 🔇 appropriately. You'll soon find that interesting content surfaces more frequently.
Those reporting for hate a blatantly antisemitic account with ~52,000 followers on Twitter/X have been told by the social media platform that posts such as the one pictured here don’t violate its standards.
When sharing tweets or images to reveal how awful they are, it's recommended to put a giant red X over them, so that people are visually reminded that this is NOT a good image.
It also prevents those who agree with the tweet or image from using your sharing of it, to promote it themselves.
Create three lists: "CUR: All", "CUR: Flipboard", "CUR: Newsmast".
(CUR = CURated / CURation)
Search for "Flipboard" and "Newsmast" (Flipboard accounts share the same icon, Newsmast accounts share the same icon as well.)
Follow the accounts you're interested in. (It's by topic.)
Add each of those accounts to your "CUR: All" list. And to its respective platform list: "CUR: Flipboard" or "CUR: Newsmast".
Switch your "Home" view to "CUR: All", "CUR: Flipboard", or "CUR: Newsmast".
Another way of doing it is by topic:
CUR: Nature
CUR: Current Events
CUR: Programming
Or, by region:
CUR: Local
CUR: Asia-Pacific
CUR: Africa
Adjust it to your needs.
In the Mastodon family, you can set the list to not show up in your "Home" timeline. This way, you can still see the posts from other people you follow without it being filled with curated content boosts.
Benefits of following curation accounts:
You don't have to follow every single account.
> Usually, accounts share other topics which you probably are not interested in. Curated lists filter these topics for you.
You will discover content and people to follow.
> Both Flipboard and Newsmast boosts/reshares the original post. You see the original source/account and interact with them directly.
> You can then choose who you want to follow directly so you can see more of their content and interests, and build a friendly relationship with them.
It becomes possible to only follow 10 accounts ever, yet consume hundreds of content and information.
This way, you can avoid following hundreds of accounts which will only make your "Home" timeline confusing; and more likely, you'll miss what matters most for you because of so many posts from so many accounts.
I hope it helps you! Welcome to the Fediverse #SNS !
P.s. If you're using an awesome Fediverse software or platform besides Mastodon, the steps are similar, if not exactly the same.
I am seeing lots of posts go by that are hashtagged & aiming for reach but posted on the 🔓 setting. This is called "unlisted" and it means anyone can see the post, but...
Only the 🌏 ("public") setting will network your post via hashtags or make it searchable!
