One of the #Guix maintainers has blocked me for my vocal support for #Palestine, without any confrontation or interaction between the two of us. As a long time activist in the International Solidarity Movement, I'm used to it, but I was under the impression Guix is a more open & progressive project than what is the norm for #GNU and #FOSS
Seems to confirm those bad interactions I started having every time I chimed in on the mailing list over the past two years were in fact people trying to push me out, rather than just people having bad days.

You notice a distribution of #GNU#Linux with the Mate desktop. There are three windows open. The foremost is a vlc open on a playlist. Behind this, you see two text editors and a firefox. One editor has what looks like an #introduction post for Mastodon. The other has a #DND5E character sheet, in progress. The firefox has the DND wiki. On one of two easy chairs, you see #LGBTQIA#Pride graphic tees. You realize there's nothing worth stealing, so, you quietly exit.
#GNU#HURD has always intrigued me ever since I learnt about it a decade or so ago. Back then it looked super intriguing and offering flexibility that goes even beyond Linux', but it was also much more limited in hardware support.
I recently looked it up again and it seems its development has slowed down (even more).
If anyone uses it, I'd love to hear your experience!
In the Q&A, someone asks Hinton about the ethical dilemmas of #LLM training on copywritten data, to which he responds that he's only done research on the existential risk of AI and others understand the ethical arguments surrounding #labor issues better than him, so he has no comment.
Next someone asks his opinion on #FOSS LLMs to which he responds:
"If these things are going to be dangerous it might actually be better for just a few big companies — I don't work for #Google anymore so I'm not saying this on their behalf — but it might work out for a few big companies, preferably in several countries, to develop this stuff along with ways of keeping it under control. As soon as you #OpenSource anything, people will start doing all sorts of crazy things with it; it will be a really quick way to learn how far things can go wrong"
Um, wasn't this figured out back in 2007? It's called #AGPL, the AI-safe #gnu license that demands that anyone who interacts with the programs built from modified source code have readily-available access to that very source code.
Call me crazy, but I'm much more compfortable with software that everyone can audit than trusting a few corporations who are wreaking havoc on the planet as we speak.

While I agree with the @fsf warning about the emblematic value of the decision by #Google to pull support for #JpegXL from #Chrome, their article <https://u.fsf.org/3z8> is as empty as could be, especially considering that #GNU#IceCat doesn't support JPEG XL either (being based on a #Firefox branch that doesn't build #JXL support in.) You want to show that #FLOSS can do without? Do it by actually supporting what you complain Google is failing to.

Before executing important commands and scripts over #SSH, use #screen in case of disconnect. If your connection drops or you close the terminal, you can SSH back in and enter screen -r to recover from where you left off.
