For A Project™, I need to learn about the historical origins of #bitmap #fonts. Highly doubt these were first created on computers; where in the world have rectangular #tiles or #bricks carried a textual message? (The tiled signs in the #NYC subway are #mosaics, not based on a grid.) Where did bitmap fonts really start?

Plaque next to mosaic: Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole was born October 19, 1936 in Jacksonville, Florida. She is an anthropologist and educator who was the first female African American president of Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia (1987-97). Dr. Cole matriculated at age 15 at Fisk University, then transferred to Oberlin College to study sociology (B.A., 1957) and then studied anthropology at Northwestern University (M.A., 1959; Ph.D., 1967). After decades of service as a renowned professor of anthropology who helped found several departments of African American studies at prestigious universities across the United States, in 1987 Dr. Cole became the seventh president of Spelman College, the oldest African American women's college in the United States. She was committed to making the school a center for scholarship for African American women. Calling herself "Sister President," she became known as a strong advocate for the liberal arts curriculum in a changin

Plaque next to mosaic: Eartha M.M. White Given the name Eartha, which means "Storehouse to All," Eartha Mary Magdalene White was a humanitarian, philanthropist and businesswoman. Born on November 8, 1876 in Jacksonville, Florida, Eartha displayed a lifelong commitment to helping others. She embodied the motto taught to her by her mother, Clara White: "Do all the good you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, for all the people you can, while you can." In 1893, upon graduation from Stanton School in Jacksonville, Florida, Eartha moved to New York City for a brief period. A lyric soprano, she sang in the first African American opera company in the United States under the direction of J. Rosamond Johnson, brother of James Weldon Johnson. The Johnson brothers were also from Jacksonville and would later compose the hymn "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing." Upon her return to Jacksonville, Eartha displayed considerable business acumen, and she owned and operated several success

Plaque next to mosaic: Rutledge Pearson Rutledge Pearson was born in Jacksonville, Florida on September 9, 1929. He was a talented professional baseball player and high school baseball coach, educator, civil rights leader and human rights activist. 1 As a young man, Pearson was a successful professional baseball player who played first base for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro League and the Cincinnati Reds. In 1954, Pearson returned to Jacksonville to play for the Jacksonville Beach Seabirds, the city's professional team. Because he was Black, the team's owners closed the baseball park rather than allowing Pearson to play. That experience led Pearson to dedicate the rest of his life to fighting for civil and human rights. He became an active member of the Jacksonville community, including as a high school teacher, baseball coach and leader in the local, state and national NAACP organizations. He advised the Jacksonville Youth Council NAACP during their peaceful sit-ins to

Plaque next to mosaic: Rodney Lawrence Hurst, Sr. Rodney L. Hurst, Sr. is a civil rights activist, a Black historian, and the author of three award-winning books. Rodney was born on March 2, 1944 in Jacksonville, Florida. As a high school student at Northwestern Junior-Senior High School, he was a protégé of Rutledge Pearson. At 16 years old, Rodney was President of the Jacksonville Youth Council NAACP when students organized peaceful sit-ins to protest segregation. During one of the sit-ins, the students were chased through the city by 200 White Klansmen carrying ax handles and baseball bats. It came to be known as Ax Handle Saturday. Rodney's book "It was never about a hot dog and a Coke!" is his eyewitness account of the 1960 sit-ins and Ax Handle Saturday. It is the only historically accurate description of those events since the local press suppressed coverage when the events were happening. He is the author of two other books about Black history and identity.

Plaque next to mosaic: Zora Neale Hurston Zora Neale Hurston was an anthropologist, folklorist and novelist who was a member of the Harlem Renaissance. Her writings reflect a deep connection to her hometown of Eatonville, Florida, a rural community near Orlando that was established in 1887 as the nation's first incorporated Black township. She described her hometown as "a city of five lakes, three croquet courts, three hundred brown skins, three hundred good swimmers, plenty guavas, two schools and no jailhouse." Zora attended the Florida Baptist Academy boarding school in Jacksonville but was expelled in 1905 because she was unable to pay her tuition. In Jacksonville, Hurston experienced racism for the first time in her life. She explained that it "made me know that I was a little colored girl." Despite those experiences, she chose to live in Jacksonville from 1904 to 1914 and returned to Duval County after completing her bachelor's degree in anthropology at New York's Barnard Colle

Plaque next to mosaic: Ebony Payne-English Ebony Payne-English, born July 30, 1984, is a poet, lyricist, playwright and educator from Duval County. She is the first woman to establish her own chapter of the international poetry organization Black on Black Rhyme. Ebony is the 2017 Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville's Emerging Artist and recipient of the Spoken Word Gala's 2017 William Bell Humanitarian Award. As of 2021, Ebony serves as Executive Director of The Performers Academy, a 501(c)(3) arts education organization, and is a founding member of the Board of Directors for Southern Fried Poetry, Inc. which produces the largest adult regional poetry slam in the nation. Ebony is author of the graphic novel The Random Happenings as well as an award-winning poetry collection, Secrets of Ma'at. Ebony's critically acclaimed play, On Purpose, was her debut as an American playwright and was soon followed by her five-play series, The Goddess Experience.
