FCC to restore and also, hey, to protect our online activity from scrapping--be it for training without our consent, or for even more nefarious purposes.

When the public comment period opens, for your own interest, comment--the vultures will, by the thousands, using bots/AI, so we need to show up and make sure our voices are heard, and our interests protected.

I have heard/read confident proclamations that the ban would regulate not just app stores but also Internet service providers. This would be a big deal for among other things. But I don’t see it in the bill. I see “Internet hosting services.” Not the same! What am I missing? https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/7521/text

I am not a technical person so I want to know what I have got wrong about @eff's position. They seem right to me.

As I understand it, they think that the internet is built on a network of cables. To ensure that those cables do anything we have ISPs. Those ISPs route traffic over those cables. At the sending and receiving ends there are lots of computers providing a variety of services.

The think that the ISP should do no more and no less than send data from and to endpoints. This is .

Some people send horrible stuff over the net. The EFF think that they should be able to send it, but don't have a right to have it hosted anywhere. Mastodon, substack, Hetzner can all chose, and in the EFF's view should chose, to refuse to house your murderous troll farm.

This all seems right to me. A capitalist state will support rent seeking corporations and look to crush dissent. We need net neutrality to prevent Google et al from throttling access to their competitors, especially non commercial alternatives, and the state from censoring dissent. Sure protecting Nazis and murderous trolls right to route their packets doesn't guarantee either of those outcomes. The bastards will censor us and enshitify anyway. But cheering on the destruction of net neutrality only makes it easier for them to achieve their goals.

Tell me what I have got wrong

admin, to security

My interpretation of this article is that hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, etc. need to get links and repost icons for Facebook, Twitter, etc. OFF their websites. If you work for a big institution -- talk to your marketing team as they are used to doing this routinely. If you are a small provider, look at your website -- especially if you created it years ago back when no one thought of the problems and you just wanted some traffic.

TITLE: FTC, HHS warn health providers not to use tracking tech in websites, apps

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) sent a joint letter to about 130 hospital systems and telehealth providers Thursday, warning of security risks posed by tracking technologies such as the Meta/Facebook Pixel and Google Analytics.

I just went on a tour and brought some my stickers to all (but one) of the @c3stoc points.
If you can't find any, there are always more at the @haecksen village in our workshop tent.
That's also where you can find the new posters and a few of the Women in IT History posters!

The FTC banned the use of noncompete clauses.

The DOL strengthened overtime rules.

The FCC restored .

The DOT expanded protections for airline passengers.

This is what it looks like when the government works on behalf of the people.

Good morning yet again!

Today I found out my thermostat hasn't been working because of an ISP outage in the area. While I am all for , this one takes the cake for me; how can people be expected to have functioning smart houses if they keep prioritising internet leeches (such as "self-hosters") over actual customers, overloading their networks?

I'm on the phone with my provider right now, the waiting times might take a while, but this is something that's gotta be said.

In the wake of and controversy, I would like to highlight the existance of the approach.

Remember , ISPs being common carriers and them not meddling with the pages users want to see? This is similar.

Under a "remote neutral" approach each instance leaves the tight opinionated moderation policies to their own users users and the content their users generate or share with the aim of running a safe and welcoming instance for their members that's safe to federate with.

However, remote content is only moderated whenever there is a report and only blocked if it's straight out illegal to host / cache or constitute unsolicited spam/harassment. Otherwise objectionable remote content is limited at most and users can block it if they want.

I can't stress enough the benefits this has:

  1. It makes moderation feasible for small instances

  2. It does not fracture the fediverse unnecessarily

if your mobile provider tries to stop you tethering (including when roaming) using your allowance, it's worth trying (on mac):

sudo sysctl net.inet.ip.ttl=65
sudo sysctl net.inet6.ip6.hlim=65

this adds +1 to the time to live of your computer's packets and fools simple detectors which try to block tethering on the basis that it is one extra hop from computer to phone before going to the telco.

Net Neutrality is restored:

"In a 3–2 vote, the FCC voted to restore Net Neutrality protections & reclassify high-speed-internet access services as telecom services subject to Title II of the Communications Act.

The decision is a major victory for the public interest: Title II authority empowers the FCC to hold companies: AT&T, Comcast, Spectrum... accountable for a wide range of harms to internet users across the US, fast, open +fair for all of us.”
