Hey, academics! What'a news story about your school or field or both that you think more people need to know about? Can be breaking news or ongoing news.
Let's share and elevate each other's discoveries, research, whistleblowing, and other news!
Choose a major CA newspaper like LA Times or SJ Mercury
Tally how many articles about University of California are about NCAA sports teams vs how many are about this giant component of our state budget, how it's run, how well it's doing its job of educating the people of California, and conducting research in the public interest.
This needs to go national. Consider how numerous states have been rolling back child labor laws. That should also be stopped, but if you want kids to have jobs then they deserve voting rights.
Hey y'all! Happy first #Newstodon Friday of 2024 and we hope you are well-rested.

We did it! Thanks to readers like you, we raised $13,631 during this year’s NewsMatch. Thank you for believing in the power of news for YOU, not for shareholders.
We have a lot planned for 2024, and, with your help, we’re just getting started.
🚨RING THE ALARM! 🚨The Eugene Weekly, a free print newspaper in Oregon for 40+ years, is a victim of embezzlement. They found out about the theft just before Christmas, and they've already laid off staff.
But EW isn't dead yet! We can help them get over the hump while the crime is being investigated and -- fingers crossed -- they recoup some of the lost money, including retirement funds and bills owed to vendors.
We want to wish all of our followers here a restful & restorative holiday. We're so grateful for every one of you. To all the amazing #journalists & #IndependenMedia outlets thank you for making #Newstodon so rich.
We're hopeful for 2024 - we know so many of you are in the fight to protect our rights and our democracy.
#Antarctica might be thousands of kilometres away, but it affects us all like no other continent. As world leaders gather for the #COP28 climate summit, we bring you a report on how even the most remote place on Earth is beginning to crumble...
On this day in history 12/15/23. In 1874 Henry Bergh, Eldgridge Gerry, and philanthropist John D. Wright founded the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the world’s 1st anti-child abuse agency, in NYC later known as NYSPCC. It is sometimes called the Gerry Society after one of its co-founders, Elbridge Thomas Gerry. It is commonly seen as having played a key role in the development of children’s rights and protective services in the English-speaking world. #journalism#media#newstodon
Hello everyone, it's #Newstodon Friday, and we got a shoutout in @niemanlab Predictions for Journalism, 2024!

This is the first time, that I have ever in my lifetime had to do yard work and cut the lawn in December. Understand I live in the Chicago area and normally the temps are around 32-39 degrees, and the grass has stopped growing. And I am not the only one in the neighborhood who has cut their grass in December. Climate change is real. #journalism#media#newstodon
Hello everyone, it's #Newstodon Friday! We have a new story for you:
Although hormone therapy has helped menstruators regulate their periods and avoid pregnancies when used as intended, women in India have been coerced to take these pills to "purify" themselves to attend religious functions.

I had a discussion about #News sources today and decided to go through my own news list -- adding accounts and making note of those that haven't posted in a while. I also broke up my lists into different categories. Here is the list I came up with for "US and World News" -- in alpha order. Suggestions welcome!

On November 30th, Stay Home Because You're Well Day gives us an excuse to stay in for the day. We all need a break, and it is nice to take it when we are healthy and can enjoy it. That said, if everyone in the working world took the same day to stay home because we were well, chaos would ensue. We all need time alone. It is essential to disconnect from our daily routines. Sometimes a checklist of things we need to do calls to us. Others have no idea what we'd do left to our own devices. # #journalism#media#newstodon
At dawn on November 29, hundreds of U.S. soldiers led by Colonel John Chivington surrounded the village. Residents responded by waving white flags and pleading for mercy; one of the chiefs even raised the American flag in an attempt to demonstrate that he, too, was American. Ignoring these symbols of surrender and peace, the white troops opened fire with carbines and cannons, slaughtering more than 200 Native American people. Most of the victims of the massacre were women, children, and the elderly and infirm. After the massacre, the troops burned the village, mutilated the bodies of the deceased, and removed body parts to keep as trophies. Some scalps of the dead became props in plays that the troops later performed to celebrate, as one soldier boasted, “almost an annihilation of the entire tribe.” #history#histodon#journalism#media#newstodon#government
If only LA Times and other California papers would cover UC's systemic ableism. Sure, folks fought for a Disability Studies program, but that still leaves the systemic ableism within the University of California untouched.

In the latest Healthcare Business & Marketing Insights article, I examine why it is time to reconsider this practice, advocate for its prohibition, and why it is necessary.
