THE ANGER I FEEL....

Khrystyna and Svitlana were singing in the street in Zaporizhzhia an hour before a Russian missile strike on the city, and this video of them was filmed.

One of them died yesterday at the site of the strike. She was 19 years old. The other girl died in the ICU today. She was 21.

Deepest condolences to their families.

Russia must pay.

A new road bridge got opened in December in a small town somewhere in Poland. For six months it was being used by regular traffic.

Elections are coming, though, so the Polish PM decided he needs to officially open it, with media present and all. And so, we get to behold this absolute gem — an announcement from the local municipality saying that:

> On May 18th, 2023, between 10:00 and 19:00, the bridge in [location] will be closed due to its opening.

Strong @scarfolk vibes.

12 November 1922 | A Pole, Tadeusz Borowski, was born. A poet, writer & journalist.

In Auschwitz from 29 June 1943.
No. 119198
Liberated in Dachau. A lot of his post-war literature described the horrors of the camp.

It is that very hope that makes people go without a murmur to the gas chambers, keeps them from risking a revolt, paralyses them into numb inactivity. It is hope that breaks down family ties, makes mothers renounce their children, or wives sell their bodies for bread, or husbands kill. It is hope that compels man to hold on to one more day of life, because that day may be the day of liberation. Ah, and not even the hope for a different, better world, but simply for life, a life of peace and rest. Never before in the history of mankind has hope been stronger than man, but never also has it done so much harm as it has in the war, in this concentration camp. We were never taught how to give up hope, and this is why today we perish in gas chambers.” Tadeusz Borowski’
Tadeusz Borowski, “Night Over Birkenau™ Again the night. Again the fearsome sky Gyres like a vulture, like a beast of prey It crouches on the camp, on the dead quict. Pale as a corpse, the moon sets far away. And like a shield cast to the ground in battle. Amid the stars Azure Orion lies. On through the dark the transports’ motors rattle. Then the gleam in the crematoria's eyes Scalding and stifling. Slumber like a stone. Breath is choked out. The throat is split and red. The heavy boot pressed down on the breast-bone Cracks like the silence of three million dead. Night, endless night, and no light overland. The eyes are gassed with slumber, numb the brow. Like God's own Judgment on the world of man The fog must now come down on Birkenau. Translated by A.Z. Foreman

Ukrainian supermodel Alina Baikova came to Cannes Film Festival wearing a "F**K YOU PUTIN" T-shirt. Security tried to shield her clothes from view.

This happened during a premiere of The Old Oak movie by Ken Loach. Reportedly, security acted that way because any type of protests are forbidden during the festival.

Power to the Poles, standing up to their equivalent of Trumpism. 500k people, including Lech Walesa, in the streets to protest anti-democracy, anti-union and anti-LGBT politics.

“'The whole of Poland, the whole of Europe and the whole world sees how strong we are and how we are ready to fight for democracy and freedom again, like we did 30, 40 years ago,' [Former PM] Tusk told the crowds at the start of the rally."

Poland’s opposition parties look like they’ve won a solid victory in the country’s general election, according to an exit poll released immediately after voting ended.

Although Law and Justice is the largest party, three leading opposition parties would have a majority of seats in the 460-member parliament.

If the result holds it would mark a drastic change in Poland after eight years of rule by the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party.

First exit poll results of Polish elections are available, and based on these it looks like PiS might not remain in power, which would be good news. Let's wait for official results though!

About 73% of eligible voters voted. That is massive and phenomenal. Probably best result in any elections in since 1989. 🎉

But two things I am mainly interested in are:

  • the result of Konfederacja, the far-right libertarians

  • how many people voted in the referendum part of this election cycle
