GDPR trainings for researchers in the post-AI world: 'uploading research data to an AI system is part of processing and they become part of the training dataset, becoming then a permanent record. Therefore do not upload personal data to public AI systems such as ChatGPT"

I can't believe people are still using their Twitter/X accounts and actively posting on there after everything that's happened over the last year.

@noellemitchell Like you, I made the exit long ago, but my colleages who stay say they do so because that is where their is, and it hasn't made a coherent move from to even though X's values run contrary to their own values as .

How do we transition entire from X to better welcoming place without meeting them on X first? It is a vexing challenge and I sure don't have a good answer.

👌 Academic and small business owner here. This couldn't be more on point.

Academics lack key business skills which I argue are required even within but are never taught with systemic management dysfunction as a result.

One of the weirdest experience in this social media ecology was to receive an email today from the research hub of a faculty announcing they've joined and inviting all of us to follow them there. They specified you need a code link. But they have none.

A university hub. In an exclusive social media club. I have no words (which is very, very rare).

Hello #AcademicFedi and #AcademicMastodon
I have a question for you (which might sound a bit provocative, but it's an actual genuine question).

What is really the value of Auto-ethnography?

I notice a new trend in some PhD group chat (Humanities) of students resorting to this method for their research. I'm personally puzzled, because beyond some reflexivity, how can a n=1 sample being any representative? Also, isn't it a very individualistic take on research?

Had office hours with a student today about a paper due tomorrow. He was most concerned about a paragraph that might be confusing. It was the clearest and most honest thing he has written - from the heart as much from the brain.
And it had me wondering about how we teach writing that when students finally write truthfully and beautifully they can’t recognize it for what it is.

It is great to see advertisers leaving , whoops I meant the dead bird site. Same thing anymore, and it is time to start questing the motives of colleagues and orgs who remain there.

Prediction: Gen Z will take their expensive educations and run to countries who want their skills. No reason to stay in a country where the deck is stacked in favor of the old. No reason for the Zs to pay back student loans and pay taxes to keep their parents and grandparents lavishly retired in houses that can't afford. Nobody is staying around to inherit a storage space full of precious plastic crap from . We have left no legacy of worth.

The session at was a missed opportunity. This was a chance to discuss why decentralised socmed is essential going forward - digital sovereignty alone would seem to demand that. Unhooking govt, educational, major industry etc from platform monopolies is a no brainer, single users will follow. Getting wrapped up in who will pay for coders is tbh a small problem, solve the big problem of deplatforming and youll solve other issues.

You know what is the bane of my existence? The final paragraph or two of an essay. I sucked at conclusions when I was in middle school and secondary school and I suck at them still. I have ONE 👏🏼 SINGLE 👏🏼 PARAGRAPH 👏🏼 to write for my Master's paper. And I can't find it in me to do it. Help me, , you're my only hope. Post links to humanities/sociology papers whose final paragraphs rocked your world? Boosts appreciated.

Harvard's metaLab has launched https://aipedagogy.org, a resource chock full of tasty assignments by trailblazers of generative AI in the classroom. (My own "AI Sandwich" is also on the menu.)

I've already stolen Juliana Castro's "Illustrate a Hoax" for my own class!

A lot of people in academia will swear to god that their code is absolutely perfect and their computations above reproach, but they absolutely refuse to show you any of it because it's got a bad hair day or something and is not looking pretty at the moment.

needs to be a requirement in science.

I've been noticing that the main issue with University workload isn't the number of hours but more the expectation that academics will pick up unreasonable ad-hoc high-stake requests at extreme short notice and tight deadlines, and take full responsibility and accountability. But no one seems to be talking about this.
