Setting up your own #Faircamp site, just in case #Bandcamp goes to total shite?
If you're a self-hosting beginner, or just a bit rusty, this new-fangled "static site generator" thing can seem a bit arcane. A lot of manuals assume you know stuff you don't know.
Ahoy friends. Another week another 12 existential crises...
With regards to safe, simple, clean and honest place to offer tunes in a non social platform, non shop, we are about to make public our RFF community #faircamp where you can have your own space as an artist for preview, share, embed, download, and requesting sales/donations.
If that suits you, we have a very simple onboarding process tested where you just offer well tagged flac files, possibly even a zip from BC, and that's it.
It's #BandcampFriday babies! As usual, I'm asking music fans to consider spending AT LEAST as much on independent artists today as they spend on their monthly music streaming subscriptions. Most of that money goes to Spotify (or whoever) and the top 1% of artists on the platforms, leaving the majority of artists fighting for scraps.
Spending $10-20 thru #Bandcamp, #Faircamp or simply sending them some money via #KoFi or #cashapp will have a FAR greater impact than giving it to Spotify.
huuuuuuuuuuge shout out to @controlfreak and the team of elves @radiofreefedi for getting me a #faircamp site with hosting to replace my now defunct #bandcamp account.
You can check it out here, you can stream and download for free:
The FSA #Faircamp site is online! There's a couple tweaks to be made, for example, I seem to have gotten at least one release date wrong (copy/paste strikes again), but nothing I'm worried about fixing right away.
Support is always appreciated, but feel free to just listen or take advantage of the "soft" paywall too.
This week I'm officially beginning my work on #faircamp in the scope of the Faircamp 1.0 grant through #NGI0 Entrust @NGIZero, financed by @EC_NGI, which will span the next months throughout summer and early fall 2024 at least.
Working together with the people at NLnet foundation to set everything up has been a blast so far and I'm very grateful to be given this opportunity. <3 Everyone of you who use, support, contribute to, and spread the news about faircamp have made this possible as well, so thank you all!
First developments this week are the introduction of complicance with FSFE's https://reuse.software/ in the codebase, yesterday's release of a stable/version-locked AUR package (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/faircamp), setting up a dedicated "Feature suggestions" thread in the issue tracker (https://codeberg.org/simonrepp/faircamp/issues/90 - please read the fine print ;)), and some bugfixing work with support from @lislegaard which will go right into the next release. Excited to be back in the lab! \o/
My #faircamp , #owncast setup: A fanless industrial PC (Advantech ARK-2250) which also heats up (a small fraction) of this year's chilli and aubergine seedlings.
So every time I stream or you listen and download on faircamp the seedlings get a little bit of dissipated energy!
OK, so #FairCamp is terribly clever. It is a #static site generator for quickly creating a simple music streaming/storefront site.
It's somewhat limited in terms of payment supported (liberapay only, if the docs are to be believed) but this is quite clever and simple to figure out.
RFF hosted #faircamp:
Is a thing. Immediate focus is to onboard artists with no spoons/means to DIY or easily pivot. We have sponsorship for a few artists.
RFF Art House of Terror I Halloween live show:
We are getting back to planning this. Please DM if you have any material specifically fun for that or want to submit a greeting!
Stress:
We are here if you need to talk out any fedi, distribution, promo issues!
I would highly recommend giving it a thought or two. I have the feeling, that most musicians out there are still somewhat shy of it, due to a lack of understanding.
If you dealt with it properly and still want to use "all rights reserved" that's absolutely fine.
But maybe you could inform yourself about all the options.
You can now find ”Living The Dream”, my official #fedivision2024 entry which made the top 10 (at number 9) out of 72 tracks \o/, at the following fine locations:
Okay so…. basically the question is… which one of you computer science genius wants to team up and create the new streaming app that doesn’t destroy musicians lives? Because we all know my shitty python coding will never get us there. lol.
Oh wait hold on. Where is #FairCamp at? Also, I still have to link up with @radiofreefedi, since this is also viable.
Am I going to have to start a record label?
It feels more and more like that everyday.
Check out @keefmarshall great music. His groundbreaking #Image2BonkWave track & then just click next to discover an amazing musician that you've probably never heard.
Not your genre? Click Next. No harm no foul. I gurantee that you'll find some #music that you love.
Feeling cheeky? Click Random to a random spot on the webring.
Today we have a shameless plug for #BonkKnobRecords and our brand new #Faircamp site, where you can grab all previous releases including the equally brand new #BonkWaveAllstars single for nowt!
With all that saved money you could consider making an independent artist happy by supporting them, buying one of their releases, or if you're strapped for cash, praising or sharing their work.💕
There is so much more music on the #faircamp webring than appears at first look. Many of these are label sites with many artists, each with many releases.
