Meta: OH, COME ON. ISN'T THAT BETTER NOW?

atomicpoet, to bluesky

now allows you to “choose your own algorithm”.

Which sounds “incredible” and “sci-fi”—but it really isn’t.

What it essentially does is give a Twitter-like service Reddit-like features.

As an aside, now I’m wondering why Reddit doesn’t offer an alternative web front-end to make it more Twitter-like!

But how does this apply to the flavour of the ? This feature now makes me realize how big a deal Fediverse groups are going to be, and if I were @Gargron, I’d be even more excited about rolling out Mastodon’s group functionality.

Because while groups aren’t exactly relevancy algorithms, once you add a “New”, “Hot”, “Best”, etc. feed to groups, now you’re in business.

I don’t know if choosing your own algorithm is the killer feature that Bluesky thinks it is. My experience is that most people hate choice. Nevertheless, I still thinks it’s important.

Dear server admins,

If you see an account named thegx.ca/forum (thegx@…) pop up on your servers please suspend it. Some bastard has been setting up spam accounts all over. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve blocked and it’s getting annoying.

Why are you not seeing as many posts from Lemmy communities on Kbin?

Hello! You may have noticed that the majority of posts and threads in your feed on Kbin are from within the platform itself. This is because the admin has activated Cloudflare DDoS protection which basically slows down requests to kbin, to prevent the website from experiencing downtime or becoming slow to respond....

I see a lot of people sharing blanket condemnations of all of those who still remain on / , and I need you to slow down a bit.

Sure, in some cases this is justified - journalists should really know better. But there are a lot of communities on that platform that are vital to many people's well-being that haven't been replicated on the or elsewhere. Take - while is growing, it's still minuscule in comparison. The number of Twitter users in is staggering, while they are only a handful on . And so on, and so forth. Twitter was a lifeline to many marginalized people, and it still is - even though it gets worse every day - and we need to recognize this.

As a white European guy, it was easy for me to walk away from Twitter (I still have an account there, but I only post "you should go to Mastodon" stuff these days) - since it is easy to find people of a similar background to interact with. But this is NOT true for everyone!

So I'd like everyone to show a bit less contempt to the remaining Twitter users in general, and put some more effort in how to make the Fediverse friendlier to marginalized voices. Because there is MUCH work to be done here!

Ya'll do realize you can customize what you can/can't see on kbin/lemmy, and your experience is about about how you make it right?

I've just seen a lot of post recently complaining what they see on their front pages such as news, politics, endless memes, etc. But you do know if any of those subs bother you or seem excessive, you can filter the subs so that they don't appear on your front page anymore. Filter memes and 196, and about 70 percent of the memes...

Did you know you can easily search through your own Mastodon posts?

Just include from:me in the search field.

Instead of this, you can include in:library to show posts you have interacted with or written yourself.

If you want to search through posts of a specific user, include from:username (the full username, including the instance)

If it doesn't work, have a look at this:

What if somehow starts pumping ads and promoted content into the ?

The latest "hot-takes" article on (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/07/fear-loathing-and-excitement-as-threads-adopts-open-standard-used-by-mastodon/) suggests that Meta is still working out some 'small details', like:

  1. Account migration
  2. What Threads content, "including, potentially, the role of ads" will be broadcast out into the Fediverse
  3. How Fediverse users will be able to see or interact with Threads

Can all instances at least commit that pushing ads at us is a step too far?

🤩 Aren't you just delighted by all those proprietary software apps for the ?

😮 Don't be. Each time you choose proprietary you help turn the fedi slowly in the direction of the usual corporate hellscape that the rest of the Web already is.

😨 And then we end up in an online space where for years we can complain to each other how we squandered an opportunity and how won once more.

🎯 Use apps instead, created by the public for the public.

atomicpoet, to Futurology

I just had a look at 's recent press release about , and something caught my attention right away.

For the very first time, they're acknowledging another platform alongside . Specifically, they're highlighting that can now connect through .

Now, you know Meta's PR department doesn't say things by accident. So here's why this is a big deal. Last time I checked, WordPress powers a whopping 43% of the Internet. Yeah, you heard that right! If you visit a website, there's a good chance it's using WordPress as its CMS.

Now, if even a fraction of those WordPress sites start federating, it could have a huge impact on the network effect of the Fediverse. Of course, Meta isn't oblivious to this. I've been talking about the potential of WordPress and ActivityPub for quite some time now.

But if you're particularly observant, you might also notice that they mention . We've known for a while that Tumblr is likely to integrate ActivityPub into their platform.

But here's an interesting tidbit: Did you know that one company, Automattic, not only owns Tumblr but is also the driving force behind WordPress?

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but once again, PR departments don't just drop hints randomly. I have a strong feeling that Meta has been having some high-level discussions with Automattic about the future of ActivityPub. It wouldn't surprise me if Meta has some insights into Automattic's upcoming plans for the Fediverse.

The network effect for is gaining some serious momentum right now. As more services adopt the protocol, more people, more communities and more content are added to the network making it increasingly more valuable for everyone. This will only accelerate in the coming months as Threads, Wordpress, Tumblr, Flipboard and others federate.

We're still in early innings but there's no way to put this genie back in the bottle. The open social Web / the is going to be huge.

john, to threads
@john@sauropods.win avatar

Having read and participated in the defederation debate, and I’ve noticed that there are two quite different projects going on in the , and they don't have the same goals.

The first is about creating a social network that is a nicer or safer place to be. A place with far less trolling, harassment, and fewer dickheads.

The project has has pretty much achieved its goals. Why federate with Threads? It will just bring threadheads causing trouble. Growth is not important.
