Every day, police rely on common tactics that, unlike guns, are meant to stop people without killing them, such as physical holds, Tasers and body blows. But when misused, these tactics can still end in death.
A new AP investigation finds more than 1,000 people died after police subdued them through means not intended to be lethal. In hundreds of cases, officers weren’t taught or didn’t follow best safety practices for physical force and weapons. #policing #force https://apnews.com/projects/investigation-police-use-of-force/visual-story/
To those who say "capitalism doesn't force people to do anything. They have free will", if someone put a gun to the head of someone, would that not be a use of force? And how would you feel if the gunman said "I'm not forcing you to do anything. You have the freewill not to give me your money." But if you don't then you'll die, just like the worker will die if they don't do what the capitalist says.
Any good way to toggle the open attribute on a <details> element according to a media query - essentially watching for changes? And is there a terrible accessibility reason not to do that? Basically it's about hiding content on smaller screens
The terrible human toll in Gaza has many causes.
A chilling investigation by +972 highlights efficiency:
An engineer: “When a 3-year-old girl is killed in a home in Gaza, it’s because someone in the army decided it wasn’t a big deal for her to be killed.”
An AI outputs "100 targets a day". Like a factory with murder delivery:
"According to the investigation, another reason for the large number of targets, and the extensive harm to civilian life in Gaza, is the widespread use of a system called “Habsora” (“The Gospel”), which is largely built on artificial intelligence and can “generate” targets almost automatically at a rate that far exceeds what was previously possible. This AI system, as described by a former intelligence officer, essentially facilitates a “mass assassination factory.”"
"The third is “power targets,” which includes high-rises and residential towers in the heart of cities, and public buildings such as universities, banks, and government offices."
"The unit is engaged in the same kind of AI work that the world’s biggest tech companies, like Google, Facebook and China’s Baidu are doing in a race to apply machine learning to such functions as self-driving cars, analysis of salespeople’s telephone pitches and cybersecurity — or to fight Israel’s next war more intelligently."
“I’ve always loved algorithms. I was already involved with them in high school and worked in the field. When I [was] drafted I wanted to combine the technology with a combat,” Maj. Sefi Cohen, 34, recalls.
The unit’s only female member left recently. so for the moment it’s an all-male team. Cohen says: “Everyone who’s here is the tops.”
#Canada should legalize #mace and other self-defense #weapons like #guns. Self-defense is legal in Canada, but you can't own something that's specifically for self-defense against another human. They have bear mace, though.
Self-defence is legal - but very strict - you're required to use the bare #minimum of #force you can. If you #kill or seriously #injure someone in self-defence in Canada, you are almost certainly being #criminally charged, and probably #convicted, including #jail time.
Note that even being caught carrying #mace, even if it's labelled "bear mace", can get you a "carrying an illegal #weapon" charge - not just theoretically, they #prosecute all the time for this.
I'm going to have a bit of a #tech#rant (less charitable people might say #whine) here. If you just want jokes and cute bunny pictures, feel free to skip this one.
Object of my #ire this week? #Furnaces. I'm not even going to rant about their main control boards; most of that's been said better than I could say it, by others with more knowledge than I.
However, when you push a current through a conductor, it "pushes back" some, fighting the change to its magnetic state. This is normal; you sometimes have to account for it to prevent damage to the driving electronics. It's called "back-EMF".
In April, before fed #prosecutors#indicted#Trump, 1 survey showed that 4.5% of #American adults agreed w/the idea that the use of #force was “#justified to restore Donald Trump to the presidency.” Just 2 months later, after the 1st federal #indictment of Trump, that figure surged to 7%.
The indictments of Trump “are the most important current drivers of #PoliticalViolence we now have,” said the author of the study, Robert Pape, a political scientist who studies political violence at the UofC.
My headcanon about #Ahsoka is that the new galaxy they travelled to is the same galaxy in which #Willow takes place, where the #Force is experienced/understood in terms of magic.

First part of the new #gravel#bicycle drivetrain is here. Cheapo €12 38t generic oval narrow-wide chainring. It will go well with the #Eagle / #Force#AXS parts…🤡
