Here it is, my top 20 albums of 2023. It's not ALL metal, although there's a lot of metal. I know not everyone likes metal (or brutal death metal) - but there's some rap, some punk, a little post punk- actually, my top 3 here are all non-metal.
As always, let me know your thoughts, especially if you check some of them out, or already have.
Setting the tone for this #HipHop#AdventCalendar is Kam's Holiday Madness - I believe rap's most in-depth treatment of America's relation with its public holidays, including Christmas:
Kam, a cousin of Ice Cube, came out of the latter's Lench Mob stable with his excellent 1993 debut Neva Again, which has this song on; you may know him from stealing the show on Ice Cube's Color Blind, too.
Remember the first rap song you heard? As the genre turns 50, the Associated Press asked some of your favorite rappers and DJs about the first ones they can recall and how the music influenced their lives. Their responses are like taking a trip down hip-hop memory lane. We want to know which rap song was the first one you heard: https://flip.it/xqs0qk #Music#Rap#HipHop#Entertainment#Polls
Which of the following musical artists has the greatest "albums per year" ratio? By that, I mean, the number of full length studio albums (excluding live albums, collabs, or compilations) recorded over the number of years they have been or were actively a recording artist or band.

The ratios will be posted tomorrow after the poll is closed.

“Meanwhile In Meatspace” was the first Yoni Den long player, released on BandCamp in January 2020. Later that year it was (re)released on HoloJamz with a limited physical release on MiniDisc and Cassette, some sweet merch in the form of Tee Shirts and ArtPrints. Unfortunately, after selling out the MiniDiscs and a bunch of tapes, HoloJamz went to the wall and the orders were never fulfilled.
That’s as close as I ever got to a physical release.
And it kind of soured this Album a little for me, for a short while.
It’s a goofy album.
I loved it when I was making it.
It was made entirely on the Elektron Digitakt, using no track mixdowns, so it’s limited to eight ‘tracks’ or ‘voices’ at any one time. This gives a great minimal lofu kind of vibe to the album. I rarely use more than three drums in a track,(this is true of most of my music! Ha!), it’s mixed by ear in the digitakt and recorded with Zoom H6. I guess it is mostly Instrumental on the Hip-Hop side of Hip-House, your guess is as good as mine.
Today, almost four years on, this is still a goofy album.
I do love it again.
It’s a name your price release on BandCamp, just pop in zero to cop.
I hope you will enjoy it!
I am old enough to remember the time diss tracks came out a year apart, and it was often hard as hell to work out the chronology between disses and responses. 😅 #HipHop
Well, I spoke too soon. Another one I can't believe I missed last year. And it is 🔥
I love The Roots and Black Thought is one of the greatest rappers to ever walk Earth, so this record he did with El Michels Affair shoulda been a no-brainer. It came out just 10 days after my birthday last year and I somehow heard NOTHING about it until a couple days ago. #NowPlaying
I still laugh a little bit every time I hear #50Cent "In Da Club":, because the "happening secret club" in the official video was owned by Huell Howser (Howser was a folksy, popular TV host for KCET/PBS). #hiphop#HuellHowser#pbs#volcanohouse
For me, my initial thoughts go to the lyrical poetry and storytelling of Andre 3000 of #Outkast in "A Day in the Life of Benjamin Andre." There is not a music video for it, but you can listen to it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXPWQqXv2zM
This is such masterful storytelling that draws you in with amazing flow and fantastic beats while Andre 3000 tells his, as of yet, incomplete story.
Hey yall imma looking fo mo folks to fuck with on this app with similar interests 🙏🏿 #hiphop#sciencefiction#music

Featuring Shabaka Hutchings in many lineups, a bunch of Tom Skinner in various guises, Nubya Garcia, Chelsea Carmichael, Moses Boyd, Yazz Ahmed, some #hiphop crossover here and there, both Ill Considered and the IC/Skinner project Wildflower, etc. This leans fairly heavily towards more recent material but goes back to when the scene was first gaining international attention. It is NOT exhaustive, by all means suggest other artists!
