Speechless. TIL: There are loads of unexploded munitions on the seabeds around Europe (not the batshit bit) and people want to remove them before installing wind turbines and cables (also not the batshit bit). So they do it by just blowing them up.
Now if I wanted to dispose of stuff like that on land, that’s standard practice - I did it during my PhD when a charge failed to go off as expected. But to do it underwater, where sound is critical to so much marine life? ARGHHHHH. #ocean#noise
I was experimenting with colour distances at work today. I need to find out how similar two colours are, so I wrote a little test program and it was surprisingly pretty.
The algorithm is simple:
Fill the canvas with random colours.
Set the first pixel (top left) to red.
For all pixels, find the most similar pixel and move it next to the current pixel.
To determine the similarity, I calculated the 3D distance in the RGB, HSV and YUV color spaces, which brought very different results. Now, it's quite possible that my HSV and YUV conversion functions were just broken, but that's okay.
Got home late enough from work night out that I didn't even listen to yesterday's taalem advent before just buying it and going to bed. But I'm sitting listening to today's advent entry now - "infidel part 2" by Nullkommajosefh, which hits a good number of my particular sound buttons. Drifty, tinge of noise, stray elements of mystery. #bandcamp#taalem#advent#NameYourPrice#drone#ambient#experimental#noise
The FSA #Faircamp site is online! There's a couple tweaks to be made, for example, I seem to have gotten at least one release date wrong (copy/paste strikes again), but nothing I'm worried about fixing right away.
Support is always appreciated, but feel free to just listen or take advantage of the "soft" paywall too.
As noted in the comments, the SIMD batch processing here is to illustrate the overall usage and handling. In this specific example, the main bottleneck is the actual canvas drawing step (esp. in Firefox, which in this case is ~3.75x slower than Chrome [latter easily manages 60fps]). The SIMD step could handle magnitude(s) more points per frame, also on FF...
As an aside, this is now already the 140th (!!!) fully documented small example project, bundled as part of the https://thi.ng/umbrella monorepo... Please do tell me at which point the prejudice of not having enough starting points & info about these packages will be fading into oblivion... 😅
Also big thanks to Maximillian Schulte for sending me off on this topic (as a tangent) via an issue on GitHub... I've been meaning to create more examples for these above packages for a while! Last but not least, hat tip & nerd sniping @demofox re: colored noise... 😎🤩
Some good Monday wake up music, a band I just discovered the other day -- Barren Womb. They have a new album coming out in February, and this one is from 2020. It SMOKES.
I don't even know what to compare it to. They call it 'doomsday rock' - I might hear some Helmet or Fugazi or something, I dunno. Refused? Clutch? It's great, dynamic, fun, loud, catchy-- GREAT all the way through. And one of the coolest riffs might be in the last few seconds of the album!
I have a weird question. There is a surge protector on my desk for all the electronics. One of its capacitors gives this very high-pitched, almost inaudible, but constant and thus super annoying whine.
“The team found that a school of #fish moving together in just the right way was stunningly effective at #noise reduction: A school of seven fish sounded like a single fish.
Got a video of The Jesus Lizard playing The Garage in 1993 on while I’m working, and the 43 year old part of me that works in health & safety is wondering how David Yow got away with crowdsurfing with a wired mic without accidentally throttling anyone.
The 13 year old that I was at the time would have thought it all far too scary, but five short years later would have killed to be in the pit.
Happy Friday, everyone. My first new album in a year is here. A Knife Into Flowers is six tracks of dissonant synths, surrealist adventures in distortion, transistor radio surfing and vaguely post-apocalyptic goodness.

What's the fascination with noise-cancelling headphones? The last thing I want when wearing #headphones is to completely block out the real world. That sounds really dangerous; how will you hear if someone's breaking into your house or sneaking up behind you to slit your throat?
Maybe it's the symptom of living in #SouthAfrica with its high #crime (and home invasion in particular) rates. Or maybe it's another symptom of my tunnel vision, where I can't see people approaching me from the side anyway, and therefore have to rely on environmental sounds more than the average person. Maybe it's a bit of both, but cancelling out all background noise just feels like a really bad idea to me.
I wear headphones often, but when I do, I make a point of sliding one of them slightly off my ear, specifically so I still CAN hear what's going on around me.
Sorry if you routinely wear noise-cancelling headphones and I've now made you paranoid about someone sneaking up behind you and slitting your throat! XD #SorryNotSorry
This started out as a dumb joke and then became an avant-garde exploration of the paranoia of a bedroom musician with severe anxiety and then went back to being a dumb joke. Maybe a couple times. Maybe it's just a guy entertaining himself, maybe it's high art, can anyone really tell the difference? Is there a difference?
Do I really want to draw any attention to this? Pre-emptive regret but..
"The last century has witnessed commercial aviation flourishing at the cost of environmental degradation by boosting greenhouse gas and CO2 emissions in the atmosphere...
If you drive a particularly loud vehicle, or blast your car stereo, and you drive by someone’s home or work or just where they happen to be at that moment,
some people won’t notice
some won’t mind
some will be slightly annoyed
some will be stressed out
some will be tortured
You might think “it’s just one car, what’s the big deal?” But you’re not the only one doing that.
Oui alors j'avais une idée de NOISE dans la tête depuis quelques jours, alors ce matin j'ai tout branché, enregistré, pris une photo, tout rangé, mixé, et voilà. Les ravages de la noise.

My music (feinstruktur) is a mixture of ambient, experimental, glitch, noise and academic modern music, not really fixed to any genre or box, mostly electronic in the moment.
