"Meta's Instagram-linked Twitter rival 'Threads' could arrive on July 6th"

What are the odds you'll sign up for "yet another Twitter"?

It's a Zuck site. Guessing privacy is not a thing.

Not feeling it. Would much rather have a next-gen, privacy-first, social network with innovative features.

Opinions? Anyone diving into Threads when it drops?

how many social networks do introverted nerds need anyway? 🤓 this introvert has enough.

Threads by Meta will be very successful because it gives people exactly what they were looking for in an alternative:

☑️ Looks and feels like Twitter
☑️ No need to start over from 0 followers
☑️ Integrates with the growing Fediverse, the future of social networks and where a lot of people who already left Twitter are

Nour,
@Nour@fosstodon.org avatar

I personally see as a big win for the Fediverse:

  1. Gives Mastodon a lot more popularity by association.
  2. People eventually realize they don't need to rely on Meta to stay connected with people and disperse to other instances.
  3. People will also realize the value of decentralized and federated social networks and protocols. Siloed platforms will be unthinkable, especially with the rising threadiverse (kbin/Lemmy). Once Meta are in, they can't back out and will have to adapt.

@clifff if this is a interface? Then must be blocked from all of to prevent our content gets leaked to / . Yes, I know everything on fediverse is public and can be easily scraped, but I still wouldn't like Meta to have it on a golden plate without any effort.

Also, it is still possible some conversations are not meant to be public.

If Jack Dorsey & Elon Musk (who are friends) just wanted to run a MAGA site full of fascists, they could have just bought Parler & saved themselves approx 43.999 billion dollars.

What they wanted was to cripple the sad remnants of investigative journalism, and the political left, which successfully used Twitter for political organizing, activism & messaging throughout the Trump regime.

Why would anyone who cares about either of these things go to Jack's project.

johnhowesauthor,

@chargrille I love Mastodon but there are good reasons to use commercial sites. E.g. your instance hasn't signed up to the Mastodon Server Covenant (most haven't), which means they could shut the server down with no notice.

Also, commercial sites don't need you to move instances when volunteer admins lose interest or close down servers.

Having said that, I have no plans to join or 🙂

johnhowesauthor,

@chargrille I agree with you, but Mastodon's model is both a boon and a barrier.

I've tried to get friends to use Mastodon but they say it's either too techie or nobody they're following is on it. I've seen notable figures join Mastodon and then leave when they get little engagement.

I wish I knew the answer.

I love Mastodon, but I understand why people would want a less techie network with all the celebs and influencers etc.

@rgulick @rolle @sallar it's never about the tech, but critical adoption from the right niche audience that'll amplify the network effect.

opalium, to Futurology

by forcing itself into the is bad and will harm the Fediverse as a whole if not straight up kill it.

I am baffled to see claims such as "we should give them a chance!" or "this could help the Fediverse grow!", as if we're not talking about one of the probably most immoral, unethical, and predatory businesses in this day and age.

Meta isn't coming to play fair. They're coming to use us for profit.

"Embrace, extend, extinguish."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

1/🧵

opalium,

Meta's plan for the Fediverse and ActivityPub is likely no different. At first they will play nice and lure in servers and users. Mastodon will see a meteoric rise in activity - but most of it will be from .

Meta needs Mastodon to seed activity in Threads. By federating, they can show how "active and flourishing" their app already is, with activity from servers showing in their app.

It's much easier to kickstart a platform when you have years worth of content already.

5/🧵

opalium,

isn't here to play fair. They're not here to help grow the Fediverse. They want to use it as a kickstart for their own walled garden, and they will suck the life out of the Fediverse if we won't resist their reach.

They're a cold, heartless, profit-driven . Not an ally.

We must not fall into this trap. We must not tag along. Meta can't take over if we won't give them the initial footing.

Don't trust them. Don't federate with them.

8/🧵

opalium,

But as it grows, will stop playing by the rules. At first just slightly, with different implementations that the Fediverse will have to adapt to. Then bigger changes - perhaps a new "moral" way to monetize content. Mastodon admins will gladly take the help in paying the costs.

And since Threads has all the users, servers will have to either play along and stay federated, or break off and lose most users, plus risk their own migrating to where the action is.

@teodozjusz To be honest, my source for this was this post by @jwildeboer https://social.wildeboer.net/@jwildeboer/110654887756367810

I misinterpreted Facebook's general habit of violating the GDPR to be a specific issue with the app. It seems like we'll just have to wait and see. From screenshots it appears to collect a lot of personal information, but I'm not sure if it's properly asking for consent.

Just got around to blocking / on this server, as well as limiting Universeodon.com (which means they won't show up in feeds, but if you search for a user on there, you can follow etc).

I do not want to crumble because folks trusted a well known large organisation known for annihilating its competitors (such as Snapchat, for example).

So, is going to be Instagram-branded? & they want to bootstrap it by porting over your Insta circles? & the official marker for product launch is the launch of the app?

Starting to think folks on the fediverse might have been worrying way too much about this thing. Good chance there will be a flurry of journalists who'll pronounce it a dud when Instagram users stay away in droves.

FeralRobots,
@FeralRobots@mastodon.social avatar

If you go to threads.net (& you're using a browser that will display the site - several I've tried, won't), you'll get a placeholder page with some cheesy circa-2007-looking javascript animation of a sort of spiral galaxy...thing...in Instagram colors, & a countdown clock to sometime on 7/6.

Only way to get more information about is to scan a , which suggests to me (again) they want to aggressively drive users to phone apps (where Meta can more effectively mine data).

FeralRobots,
@FeralRobots@mastodon.social avatar

One assumption I see being made about is it's going to have a much larger user base than the .

That seems unlikely to me.

Instagram has something north of 2B active users, but that's the wrong assumption. For a host of reasons one simply does not launch a new service with 2B user accounts. Threads will have to woo existing Instagram users, who in turn will have to perceive a value-add.

To put that another way: Threads' user base will be people unhappy with Instagram.

So, I’ll probably look to move to a Mastodon server that isn’t automatically going to block . I just can’t see the point of blocking something until it is actually an issue. Blocking is really easy - so do it when needed

rainbowdash,

@my_actual_brain @rachel_norfolk You can’t block instances as a user. You can only mute them so if you are against getting a piece of your content, you muting it won’t stop it from doing that. I guess that’s why people are demanding admins block Threads right now already.

Really not enjoying the ignorant privacy freakout about the App Store privacy declaration. It's entirely normal for big companies to cover their backsides like this with such apps; the Facebook and Twitter apps both do it for starters, and Mastodon should probably do it too were it a bigger company with more interest in legal arse-covering.

Not the finest moment of this place in terms of being free from misinformation.
