Went out to feed the birds this a.m. & saw something "mounted" to a back porch support beam. Closer inspection revealed it was a very large . My ID app suggests Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) with an average wingspan of 6". It was just chilling during the a.m. storms. I hoped it would open up but it just stayed motionless. It was quite dark so the pics aren't the best. Antennae are very cool!

Closeup photograph of a large moth's antennae and tufted head. An ID app suggests it is Antheraea polyphemus or the Polyphemus moth) with an average wingspan of 6 inches. The moth has large, tear-drop shaped, brownw antennae and a large body and legs covered by long brown hairs. Its wings are patterned and scalloped with grey and brown and it has a large brown "eye" on its outer wing that is surrounded by a narrow circle of light tan.

Came a across a large flock of cedar waxwings feasting on last year's crab apples the other morning. I find photos of cedar waxwings difficult to edit and it's hard to do these gorgeous birds justice with a photo. I was fortunate to have had plenty of opportunities that morning and took (way too) many photos. I'll post more as I'm able to slog through them all.

I have fun taking macro photos of especially on purple coneflowers which they seem to enjoy & frequently visit. They're so large & cooperative that it's not too hard to make them "appear" the size of a school bus. My ID app suggests that this is a brown-belted bumblebee (Bombus griseocollis) which is a North American native.

Living in a medium sized city it's not often I see interactions between large species. The eagle caught a fish & landed on an ephemeral log out of frame to the left. After eating the fish, the eagle hopped to the juvenile great blue heron's log. It's a favorite fishing spot for the eagles so it may have been trying to intimidate but the heron stood its ground.

The Iowa River Power Dam provides an ideal location to photograph waterfowl. The only "problem" is that the Canada geese like to fly directly at/over the dam from below. They seem to like that angle for take off & it takes them directly at me on the dam. Tough, for me, to keep them in frame but also pretty intimidating to have something that large flying directly at you😬.

It's exciting & calming going through my photo roll when I get home. One aspect I hadn't considered prior to taking up photography was the impact of going through the roll & watching the wildlife watching back or at least appearing to watch back. It's an intimate experience that is very calming. But on occasion it's also a bit disconcerting.

Shortly after getting my 1st macro lens (Nikkor 40mm f/2.8) in 2021, I took a trip to Chicago. Despite having other lenses I decided to take only the 40mm. It was fun/challenging being restricted to a fixed focal length. Surrounded by all that architecture & incredible views, my favorite photo was taken on a quiet street corner on the north side. I was photographing the flowers when I caught one(!) pic of the .

My ground phlox (possibly Phlox subulata/moss phlox) has achieved blanket status.

I'm a sucker for mass blooms. A friend of mine has large swaths of this phlox & was kind enough to borrow me a cup 2 yrs ago. A cup that was 1.5' x 2' chunk that I then plopped down in a 1.5' x 2' space.

Easy peasy phlox carpet squee-sy.

Not sure its the same pair but a pair built their nest in this exact same location last yr. Its on some rock fill along the Iowa River & right next to the Iowa River Trail in Coralville, Iowa. Was fortunate to get a good view of the nest when she chose to stand up & turn her eggs as well as scrounge the surrounding rocks for something to eat. Unfortunately, in the city it is not usual to see wildlife incorporate human detritus in their nests 🙁.

Definitely one of my favorite photos from last year so I thought I'd re-post.

To me it kinda feels like the Eurasian tree sparrow is inviting you to explore the interior of the hornet's nest 👀.
