What a week in AI!

  • Microsoft releases its biggest invasion of your privacy in decades!
  • Sam Altman violates Scarlett Johansson to get her likeness for his digital parrot!
  • Google UX legend Scott Jenson declares idea bankruptcy at Google and panic driven AI development because they want to lock you in faster than their competitors!

This shit is going great!

The http://matrix.org homeserver has been struggling with load over the last 24h (thanks perhaps to Slack for driving users our way: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/05/slack-defends-default-opt-in-for-ai-training-on-chats-amid-user-outrage/) - we're working on fixing performance. Folks on other homeservers are of course unaffected. Apologies for the inconvenience. https://status.matrix.org is tracking the incident.

Yay! The in-progress wasi:i2c proposal (WASI spec for embedded devices) just moved to phase 2!

This means it's not just something promising anymore, but it seems ready to be implemented in host systems and begin gathering implementation and user feedback from.

I'm legit very excited about this! — But this seems like it has a real shot at improving the embedded development experience. Virtual platform layering, local platform emulation, standard APIs, etc. etc. I'm into it!

Work has started on the next biscuit version: https://github.com/orgs/biscuit-auth/projects/4/views/1

Some features are already specified, with a candidate implementation in biscuit-rust, some are specified with no implementation yet, and some are yet to be specified.

Also, there are still v4 features that are not implemented everywhere.

So there's a lot to do for people willing to actually contribute to biscuit 🎉

I really wanted to know which libraries are bloating my WebAssembly binaries, so I wrote a visualizer.

Throw in a .wasm file with DWARF debug symbols, and wasmphobia will generate a flame graph for you, breaking down the module by source file.

Shell has sold millions of ‘phantom’ carbon credits based on emissions savings that never happened, according to a new investigation.

Shell made more than $200 million dollars selling the credits from its flagship carbon capture facility called 'Quest'.

Canadian taxpayers covered 93% of the costs of building the 'Quest' carbon capture project.

There was no drone delivery future. There was never going to be a drone delivery future.

Just like there was never going to be self-driving Uber taxis. Or Amazon Go supermarkets on every corner. Or hyperloops. Or earth-to-earth space travel on SpaceX rockets. Or level-five full self driving Teslas.

Just like there will not be a general artificial intelligence ChatGPT in the next couple of years.

They were all scams designed to lure dollars from investors and generate good PR.

It was all bullshit. It was always bullshit.

Nothing more.

Completely mind boggling to me that we threw away 5 billion phones in 2022.

Some of those could have been repurposed: smartphones are hardly innovating any more. The most eco-friendly phone is the one you already have.

We need to publicly support communities like @postmarketOS who work on making these phones repurposable, and @gnome that work on making a polished mobile experience that serves people, not creepy corporations.

Incredible research at BlackHat Asia today by Tong Liu and team from the Institute of Information Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (在iie.ac.cn 的电子邮件经过验证)

A dozen+ RCEs on popular LLM framework libraries like LangChain and LlamaIndex - used in lots of chat-assisted apps including GitHub. These guys got a reverse shell in two prompts, and even managed to exploit SetUID for full root on the underlying VM!

Last night, about 21 hours ago, Manfred Paul demonstrated a security exploit targeting Firefox 124 at pwn2own.

In response, we have just published Firefox 124.0.1 (and Firefox ESR 115.9.1) containing the security fix.

Please update your foxes! 🦊

Kudos to all the countless people postponing their sleep and working towards resolving this so quickly! Really impressive teamwork again. Also, kudos to Manfred for pwning Firefox again :)

🦀 I'm really excited about today's release! 🥳

  • offset_of!
  • stripping release binaries by default!
  • IP/socket types available in no_std!
  • File::create_new (won't overwrite existing files)!
  • more array and slice methods (each_ref, chunk methods)!
  • Mutex::clear_poison!

Really cool to see the c"" string literal feature stabilized. I wrote the RFC for c"" string literals 1, so I'm very excited to see it reach stable Rust today.

I had nothing to do with its implementation, however. The implementation was done by @beef 2 and quite a few others worked on it too 3. Thanks all, for making this happen!
