Good news for folks who enjoy AI embarrassing itself with nonsensical answers!

"Well, according to an interview at The Verge with Google CEO Sundar Pichai published earlier this week, just before criticism of the outputs really took off, these "hallucinations" are an "inherent feature" of AI large language models (LLM), which is what drives AI Overviews, and this feature "is still an unsolved problem.""

If you have access there's a 1hr based on the writings of who was a volunteer nurse in the Crimean war.

It is free on BBC at the moment.

Amazing story and typically good dramatisation.

@glynmoody Brits won't accept the Euro and that will be a condition the EU won't drop.

We may creep closer, rejoin CU etc but I can't see full membership again. So stupid and sad.

It's time to lift restrictions on the use of weapons provided to Ukraine — NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

"This is Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine. Ukraine has the right to defend itself. And this includes strikes on targets on the territory of Russia".

markhughes,
@markhughes@mastodon.social avatar

@Free_Press Joe #Biden is happy to let #Israel use it's weapons on a civilian population, and to defend these criminal actions against the #ICC but won't allow #Ukraine to use its weapons against military targets against an invader of its sovereign territory.

All with support from UK's #RishiSunak and #DavidCameron.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

'Maigret' is on Kanopy, two free episodes. I watched the first last evening. Rowan Atkinson doesn't have many lines so he has to use his face for acting purposes. Pretty good, all in all. My dad loved Simenon's books. Now I'll hunt for a couple and try them out.

The 90's series is French with Bruno Cremer. He's superb and I'm watching the series free to air on (in UK). I never miss it. They have some real gems and this is one, far better than Rowan Atkinson.

While waiting I've just seen a young Brian Cox in Manhunt (1970) which was a treat.

I don't remember how good the eighties BBC series was but I probably wouldn't have liked it at the time.

With everything that's going on in the world, at least Birdseye - a self-proclaimed ethical fishing business, owned by a massive conglomerate, previously fined billions for fraud, artificially inflating the value of produce, price fixing, overturning ethical standards, discrimination, hazardous working conditions, destroying culturally significant land for offices and public health violations - but apart from all that (and all of the product recalls for E.coli, Salmonella and fatal bronchiolitis), an ethical fishing company who use the highly destructive bottom trawlers (responsible for damaging up to half of Norway’s cold water corals reefs), but apart from that an ethical fishing company who buy a third of their produce from pirates who deal in illegal catches and over-fishing.....have commissioned someone to spend 100 hours to make a cute miniature sandwich! The saving grace is there’s no Reddit alternative for users upset about their content being sold to AI companies

Play-by-play Trump trial coverage, with so-called analysis of whether the prosecution or the defense has "scored points" -- the staple of Big Journalism right now -- is the equivalent of horse-race political coverage.

All it takes are stenographic skills and the ability to make confident-sounding guesses. It's clickbait and ratings bait, and it does nothing good for public understanding.
