Because of Light No Fire having rideable birds and being very much my thing, and it being from the devs (who really understand how to do primarily cooperative online), I'm once again thinking about No Man's Sky and

seriously if you never did the Expeditions? They're 100% the right way to experience the game now. Taking the game and necking it down to a bunch of specific but wildly divergent goals that sorta, tell a mechanical narrative, and giving you a bunch of resources if necessary to smooth out the rough spots you'd normally hit doing those, is just such a clever thing.

Really dig the community aspect too. Everyone has a good reason to build a bunch of purpose-specific bases to help everyone else along with the objectives, which gives you a new reason to go HAM and build some cool new base themed around (whatever it is), just- the whole thing is super rad. Fucking fantastic sense of community in those.

@glassbottommeg I hope that whenever Hello Games puts NMS into maintenance mode, they give players the tools to craft (and hopefully share) their own content using the tools they previously worked in via major updates and Expeditions. HG gets really creative with how they can stretch the normal mechanics of the game into a completely different experience (the semi-rogue-like mode they did in one of the previous expeditions blew my mind). Clearly, in their near-infinite universe, they can still find stories to tell, and Id love to see the stories fans could come up with well into the future.

@glassbottommeg
Is expeditions the thing where you need to pair up with some other people to do stuff? Or is it something you can do on your own?

I like the idea of NMS, and I did enjoy the hours I spent there. The quest/progression things in NMS felt a bit too tacked on and buggy to really draw me in for the long haul.

@jannem you can do your own thing, Expeditions is just a thing where every few months they announce a new expedition that has a bunch of stages and objectives per stage that'll be like "explore 10 stars" or "find a creature with a danger rating of 100". Then you run through em! Usually takes a few weeks to finish, and expeditions only change every like 4 months, so you've got plenty of time. Also you make a fresh character for each expedition, but the unlocks (you get a special reward for each stage you finish) are for all your accounts. Stuff like special buildings or decorations usually, cool visual stuff.

The community stuff is just that people will build bases with names like MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL HERE, make garden bases with stuff that'll help everyone finish goals, that kinda thing. So you don't gotta do it all on your own, and you can leave a trail that helps everyone else too!

djdesign,

@glassbottommeg seriously, Expeditions are so good.

They're not (necessarily) an ideal first experience with NMS, but they're absolutely a great way to dive back in after time away, particularly since they usually showcase the newest feature the game has added.

And the holiday redux, fast-tracking the year's Expeditions over Dec-Jan, is just great.

@djdesign They WOULD be an ideal starting point for the game: if they'd just fuckin let you keep everything.

I desperately wish you could pile your collected currency and bases and stuff back to a central save, and keep doing that with each Expedition.

Yeah it trivializes some stuff but whooo caaarrees, I really don't think the new game experience is remotely good anyways.

But that aside yeah! They're fantastic! Very much agreed on all points.
