Japan's long coastline makes marine vegetation a viable method of capturing at least a fraction of the carbon dioxide it produces. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2024/04/25/sustainability/japan-carbon-capture/

Are we at a tipping point? In the next five to ten years will problems with the UK's natural resources cause an economic slump bigger/worse that the global financial crisis of 2008?

The Green Financial Institute is projects a more than 10% negative impact on GDP over the next decade, and looking at recent reports of the impact of climate change on UK agricultural productivity one can easily see the mechanism(s) for such effect.

Australia's only native deciduous tree, Nothofagus gunnii, is now in its autumnal livery in Tasmania.

@perkinsy There are also species of nothofagus (=southern beech) growing in the Otways in southern Victoria, but they're not deciduous. Alas!

@Nigel_Purchase Thanks for sharing that. We will be visiting the Otways soon so I will look out for it

"Geothermal energy, though it’s continuously radiating from Earth’s super-hot core, has long been a relatively niche source of electricity, largely limited to volcanic regions like Iceland where hot springs bubble from the ground. But geothermal enthusiasts have dreamed of sourcing Earth power in places without such specific geological conditions" Full story from Smithsonian https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/is-geothermal-power-heating-up-as-an-energy-source-180984202/

The world dumps 2,000 truckloads of plastic into the ocean each day. CNN explores one place where a lot of it ends up: the Western coast of Java in Indonesia.

The package includes amazing (and alarming) photos: https://flip.it/HY-fvr

As Climate Crisis Grows, Youth Environmental Movements Are Radicalizing

Imagine how it feels to be 16 years old and growing up with the climate crisis hanging over your head. You look around and see cars and airplanes spewing carbon. You see plastic bottles spill from trash cans and garbage floating in the river. You hear about or directly experience catastrophic weather events with each passing season. A deep hopelessness fills your heart

#Oil Companies Must Set Aside More Money to Plug Wells, a New Rule Says. But It Won’t Be Enough.

The new Bureau of Land Management #regulation, which applies to nearly 90,000 wells on federal public land, is hampered by math errors and overly optimistic cost projections.

Don't worry, Westminster will introduce new laws to deal with that… Probably as well thought out as declaring Rwanda a safe country!

A ridiculous case - but we still have the GMC putting their oar in on behalf of the malevolent, incompetent maladministration.

🌎 Earth Day is an important reminder to commit to big or small sustainable practices that can help preserve our planet. 🌱

We can all contribute in someway.

On that note, meet our colleague @Hlini , at our data center in Iceland powered by renewable, hydroelectric energy✨

One way you can contribute is through your choice of search engine on the Vivaldi browser.

"The issue of course is the sliding baseline. The disappearance of soundscapes is happening so quickly that lots of people aren’t even noticing it. You can’t mourn something that you never knew was there. These acoustic records are a reminder of a loss that most people wouldn’t be able to identify.”

Monday briefing: The sounds of birdsong and nature are disappearing – here’s what that means | | The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/22/first-edition-soundscapes-nature-sounds

junesim63,
@junesim63@mstdn.social avatar

"The main driver of natural sounds disappearing is habitat loss driven by agricultural expansion. Almost 90% of critically endangered mammal species, and more than 80% and 70% of the critically endangered amphibian and bird species, cannot live on agricultural land – and the problem becomes even more acute for large species and species that are used to living in specialised habitats"

The progression, causes and effects of climate change have been measured by everything from multimillion-dollar satellites to the humble thermometer, but increasingly scientists — including a team in Okinawa — are turning to sound. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2024/04/21/wildlife/okinawa-sound-climate-change/

mikekato,

@thejapantimes This was a well-researched and well-written article. It is far and above, one of the best I've seen in TJT in awhile.
