Removing the confusion of server selection when signing up to #Mastodon is going to massively open the platform to more people. People should be able to tinker with their car but the reality is that most people just want to drive from point A to B.
@hirad I think rather than defaulting to just Mastodon.Social, the button should randomly pick from a pool of reasonably populated general topic servers instead. But to answer your question, I believe people naturally don't like abrupt change and will stick to things they are familiar with. Concepts like 'decentralisation' are not only alien to regular people, but they don't care to even learn about it. However, with time people will play around with servers and maybe even hosting their own.
@Ekyllier
I'd say no need to pick randomly. Just ask people their language and their favorite topic and then pick them a server (similar to joinmastodon website).
Yes people don't care. But that doesn't mean its ok. Cuz if that happens, then mastodon.social becomes yet another centralized social media.
And better such people not join at all than all join a single instance.
@michael I haven't personally used bluesky, so I might be taking out of my depth here. But that article does not seem to talk about the algorithmic sorting for post discovery. The idea of having a marketplace of user selectable post discovery algorithms is what appealed most to me reading about AT. Off the cuff this seems like it would be quite resource intensive on the servers, so I am curious how they get it going.
@michael I love Mastodon for just two reasons. The signal to noise ratio is significantly better than legacy media and the nerds intrinsic joy of running their own instance.
Competing with BlueSky - and that seems inevitable - is going to be hard. Bashing each other hurts both. Innovating is the key. Success companies from Apple to Microsoft evolved from a unique pairing of a technologist and a marketeer. You need both. We have Eugen. He needs an inspired marketeer.
It’s all fun and games on #calckey until someone imports several thousand posts from elsewhere in the #fediverse filling your feed with spam and crashing the server.
If the server I use defederates mastodon.social because it is "too big" than I’m switching to another server, if everyone starts defederating servers when they become too big all that would do is turn the #Fediverse into a fragmented mess, which is the opposite of what it is supposed to be
Hello everyone! I’m just here to test the waters. I do most of my chatting these days as @genebean but also like to dabble in other parts of the #fediverse. That account has a more compete #introducion, but basically I’m an all around geek who has a deep passion for #Linux and #HomeAutomation.
@travis last time Jack rip-off the Mastodon ideas to make another company, he took the free version of Mastodon and make it Bluesky, a product to sell after some time to meñake himself more richest so I don't know...
“decentralization” is not a consumer feature. It’s like telling someone it’s a 3.2Hz quad core with extra L2 cache. It’s like, “uh, great. Why does that matter?”
Owning your data, freely able to migrate,superior privacy controls. These are features to communicate.
@jtomchak except you can't guarantee mastodon.social will always stay in the #Fediverse. and when 1 instance has 99% of the users, it can easily decide to leave fediverse and then what?
My spouting days maybe over with since I see a collapse of #spoutible coming soon due to the #Fediverse gaining steam bluesky potentially federating soon Barcelona being created a meta platform coming soon. Once those 2 things happen that's the beginning of the end of wall gardens which means in the future I'm likely to delete my Spoutible account
