Alright folks, in an effort to in some tiny way counter the fact that everything is awful, I declare this The Thread Of Small Cheering Things! Send your cute animal and pretty flower pics! Bring on the silly memes! Share any bits of good news you manage to unearth! Spread the love! <3
Man, every since my visit to Pittsburgh I've been low key into funiculars, these twin cable cars on hill sides where one is the counterweight for the other.
I never thought of myself as a "guy on the spectrum who is into trains" but I guess I never found the right kind of train.
@GottaLaff Take a detour to the hot baths of Drakesbad in the shadow of Mt Lassen🍸😺 I know you’ll just drive straight through instead, but maybe thinking of a volcanic hot bath will ease your aches and pains 🍸🐈
@foone I seem to remember a performance-art bit in the floppy disk era which was a single-user experience (a hypertext book, IIRC) that deleted itself after viewing, and was never put online. This reminded me of it but I cannot remember what it was called. Fitting, perhaps.
@foone You can also imagine this inadvertently becoming the only record of some work, in some distant future.
Alien archaeologists: "Our records show that in the late days of human civilization, before the Antimatter Wars of the 2050s, the works of a bard named 'Tolkien' were popular. But after the Great Copyright Enforcement Purge of the libraries, then the war, all we have are excerpts, ritualistic graphics called 'memes' and one language model that produces in-universe erotic literature."
🎵 we can mask, we can mask
Everything's out of control
We can mask, we can mask
We're doing it from pole to pole
We can mask, we can mask
Everybody’s washing their hands
We can mask, we can mask
Everybody's taking the chance
@blablux
After "should designer code" and "to wireframe or not", this week we are back to "do we put the primary button on the left or on the right side of the modal?". (I would go with test it, for what it's worth)
Am I the only one feeling stuck in a loop?
@laescude yeah, I was just hoping that people who bring the topic again would bring something new and some critical thinking, so that it feels less like nothing changed.
The most frustrating part of the #PyConUS mask discussion to me is how it’s 100% focused on “your discomfort” vs “other ppl’s health”.
The MAJOR exclusionary nature of masks is inverted, tho! Of course are there ppl who don’t want to wear one for comfort or can’t for medical reasons. But the majority I talked to would be happy to wear one but wished if OTHERS didn’t wear one, so they could understand them (better, or at all). (1/4)
@bouncing@chrisjrn some people can’t/won’t register if they don’t know if there’s a mask mandate and vice versa. It’s just very, very complicated and high-stakes at the same time.
@bouncing
On the other hand, the foundation and its directors (I'm one of 12) hold liability for the conference, and so we always have to act with that in mind.
What's wanted by the "majority" won't always align with what's in the best interest of the Foundation, so a "simple" vote wouldn't get rid of the need for deep and well-considered discussion. @hynek
Hmm, when did California lose it and start using plastic bags again at grocery stores? The pandemic? For awhile there I thought everyone was using (at the very least) beefier recycled plastic bags instead of throwaway plastic, but apparently someone lobbied someone so people are just buying more disposable plastic bags (at 10 cents a shot) in my neighborhood. 😢
(Nope... I do not go to the grocery store much, LOL).
@miah That still happens here... although styrofoam is supposed to be banned, but I suppose that there is also an underground supply of styrofoam from surrounding states.
