‘Bantering with Bandits’: Annie Zaidi’s searing truths about Indian preoccupations and peculiarities
This book of essays by @anniezaidi creates a space where the personal and the political fuse to paint an often uncomfortable picture of our sociopolitical reality.
#Canadian friends, #queer friends, #film friends – you have to go see "The Queen of My Dreams" while it's in theatres. Playing at the Bytowne in #Ottawa and bigger screens too, and elsewhere in Canada - I saw it Monday and it was absolutely glorious. A hilarious, touching, queer Canadian "Lady Bird," with a touch of time travel and lots of #Bollywood. I'm getting choked up writing this post, it was that moving. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21876438/ and https://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/the-queen-of-my-dreams-1.7152878 if you need some waypoints!

Interview: ‘Big filmmakers are being mobilised by the state to further the majoritarian project’
Many movies slated for release in the run-up to 2024 have a definite purpose – to generate hatred of Muslims, says Ira Bhaskar, a professor of cinema studies.
Today I discovered something interesting — YouTube has fairly good versions of Hindi movies from back in the 80s and 90s!
Well, I think I actually discovered this yesterday when I found “Betaab” but I didn’t actually realize this till today when I searched for “EK Ladka Ek Ladki” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0291883)
Back in the 90s, Hindi movies blatantly copied Hollywood movies (with no attribution or permission, mind you) and made their own versions. “Ek Ladka Ek Ladki” is one such movie which copies Kurt Russel & Goldie Hawn’s “Overboard” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093693).
This movie is probably responsible for getting me into Hindi movies again and for learning Hindi just so I could watch the movies 🙂
I generally never watch a movie twice (with a few exceptions) but I think I must have watched this one at least 5 times …
The last time I looked for “Ek Ladka Ek Ladki” on YouTube, the only copy I could find was a really dark and hard to watch version. So this version is certainly a find for me 🙂
This gives me an idea! Maybe I should look for other movies from the 90s that copied Hollywood movies and post about them every once in a while?
I generally love the Bollywood version to the Hollywood version of these “re-makes”. So it might be interesting to introduce more people to these versions …
Rewind to 2006:
Today’s “film”, a pioneer of sorts, 😀 plagiarized/cloned a popular Korean movie, becoming one of the earliest Bollywood “films” to do so.
Note: when a Bollywood "film" is featured in a #HallOfShame post, it is automatically implied that besides plot elements, the “film” has also copied scenes and sequences from the original. 😀
Gonna work slowly on a #ModernTalking#BrotherLouie mega-thread. This song is the most popular song in the history of the world, change my mind (musicologists only) 😂
Shah Rukh Khan chants Jai Shri Ram at Anant-Radhika's pre-wedding event; dances with Suhana as Diljit Dosanjh sings
He also added, "So let me take a moment to introduce to all to the powerpuff girls of the Ambani family, the Trimurti or the trideviya of the family--the Saraswati, the Lakshmi and Parvati. Their prayers and blessings have kept this family together."
this movie is the first female lead hindi movie to reach 20.7 cror in one day!! the trailer had me hooked on to the storyline. I absolutely enjoyed the movie.
The report emerges against the backdrop of a global #cultural shift, where #Asian#artistic expressions, ranging from #KPop to #Anime and #Bollywood, are not just gaining #InternationalAcclaim but are also resonating with #NewZealand audiences. Such shift marks a significant opportunity for New Zealand to integrate these cultural forms into its own #creative landscape, enriching societal and cultural dialogues.
