Sydney council reverses ban on same-sex parenting books after fiery meeting

Good.

"Hate is not a family value." Hmmm… I like that. Neither is bigotry.

Also note that the Maritime Union of Australia came out and supported rescinding the book ban. And thanks go to them. Perhaps a reminder for everyone to join a union.

If you haven't already heard the news, Cumberland Council in Sydney's west has voted to ban books that feature same-sex parents from public libraries in their LGA.

I will be speaking more on this issue, but you can send a message to councilors via Equality Australia, asking them to rescind the motion.

The crisis is real. In places like Florida, the far-right turned classrooms into political battlefields, handed schools over to extremists and slashed pay. The GOP have made it clear they don't respect education.

Read banned books. People who want to censor/ban books are afraid of the ideas in the books. Learn new ideas. Build empathy for others.

Whenever you see a news article about that seems unfathomable to you, it's something like this. Something that challenges rigid views on gender, sexuality, or race.

The days where book banning was about bad grammar in Junie B. Jones or potty humor in Captain Underpants aren't what we're dealing with now. Don't let book banners control the conversation by categorizing their efforts as absurd.

7 minute listen about the movement to ban books. It's from NPR, so maybe a good one to share with people not aware of this threat.

If you think it was ever about "saving the children" or "parent's rights", I've got a bridge to sell you.

"A Pennsylvania school board that banned books, Pride flags and transgender athletes slipped a last-minute item into their final meeting before leaving office, hastily awarding a $700,000 exit package to the superintendent who supported their agenda."
