These Supreme Court rulings back to last year's Roe reversal suck. The question is -- are there enough aggrieved people in the "red states" who could oust their current senators up for re-election? Odds look good for a Democratic House. The Senate, sadly, not so much. #uspol#uspolitics#2024#democracy#democrats
But what size win gets #Democrats to expand #SCOTUS to 13 seats? Or makes Thomas/Alito recuse or retire? Or even convinces Roberts to establish ethics?
#Obama had a #Senate of 57 to 60 Dems and a huge #House majority. Is that the size of win we're talking? Because even then, there was always a Liebermann or other rotating Dem villain to thwart any huge progressive gains. /6
#Progressives in 2016: "But moderates", "But centrists", "But corporate #Democrats ", spreading Russian propaganda and poisoning the well against HRC just enough for Trump to eek out an electoral college win.
🧵I know I mostly toot about #Ukraine here, but the #SCOTUS has got me annoyed. More than they usually irritate me. People in my generation (elder #millennial), #GenX'ers, and #Boomers, mostly grew up with a court that's legacy was in many ways progressive. As a result, most folks respected & trusted the SCOTUS as an institution, especially when compared to the other branches of #government. #Watergate, #Clinton's #impeachment, & various #bribery & #misconduct scandals in #congress 1/n
It's not an accident that #reactionary forces in #USPolitics have spent decades and literally billions of dollars for the infrastructure to "recapture" the #Judiciary, especially #SCOTUS. #Liberal's, #Progressive's & esp #Democrats may be spooked by talk of major #reform or #amendment's to the #constitution because they seem #Radical, or somehow undermining the #court as an institution. Well the court is doing a fine job undermining the institution all by itself. 6/n
US is embattled in the debate of student loans forgiveness between #Democrats and #Republicans. Republicans obviously had an upper hand as they shaped the SC. But forgotten in this drama are:
No concrete plans for higher education accessibility,
Education business has influence over policy and courts,
Poor students are easy target for shark lenders,
Meritocracy is on decline,
American students are failing due to policies right from elementary level.
Cue rant: I hate the term, "single-payer" even more than #MedicareForAll
It's meaningless to most people because it's jargon. Really, it is. #Ingsoc absolutely approves it.
Informing people using clear, direct, jargon-free language is something the #Democrats, specifically, and much of the #left in general, have failed at my entire 65 years.
"#Government provided (or paid or both)" or something like that.
“If we start the process of trying to expand the court, we’re going to politicize it maybe forever in a way that is not healthy, that you can’t get back.” --Joe #Biden.
GOING TO?
Somebody tell the octogenarian executive here that #SCOTUS got politicized in a way we can't get back when #Democrats didn't pressure #RBG to retire and let #McConnell ratf*ck #Obama's Garland nomination.
I mean, we could, but Drug War Joe here is smothering that baby in the crib. /1
– Republicans are strong on defense.
– Republicans are for the military and for veterans.
– Republicans are hard on crime and prevent crime.
– They stand up for justice and the rule of law.
– Republicans are "for life."
– Republicans are for family values.
– Republicans are better for the economy, and they reduce deficits.
@TonyStark Republicans' lies don't deserve any more space in people's brains. Better not to repeat them (and activate those frames), even in rebuttal.
Let's mention the truth instead.
Democrats are better for the economy, and they reduce deficits.
Democrats are for true family values, for all families.
Democrats are for life and health and well-being.
Democrats are for freedom, including reproductive freedom.
Democrats stand up for justice and the rule of law, even against oligarchs and politicians.
And so forth.

President Joe Biden
Joe Biden and the Democrats have delivered!
The Republicans - they are busy talking about Hunter Biden's laptop, reneging on their debt ceiling agreement, and supporting twice impeached, twice indicted (with at least two more coming) and three-time Adulterer Donald Trump! #News#GOP#Politics#USA#Trump#MAGA#Republicans#democrats
Uh oh, Speaker McCarthy. You shouldn’t have suggested that Trump might not be the “strongest” candidate. The MAGA folks already don’t like you. You sure you want to stay Speaker?
@georgetakei I've said before: Democrats should take full advantage of weaknesses and opportunities in the Republicans' House rules.
In particular, passing the #JudiciaryAct of 2023 (enlarging #SCOTUS to 13 justices) should be a necessary condition for allowing business as usual, and not challenging the speakership every day a #Republican holds it. (And not delaying or obstructing with other tactics.)
USA Politics today:
•Biden gets $42B for broadband—Trump admits to stealing classified docs
•PA Gov Shapiro repairs I-95 in 12 days—FL Gov DeSantis tries to cancel citizenship
•IL Gov Pritzker signs bill to guarantee breaks & a day off—TX Gov Abbot bans water breaks
Dems aren’t perfect, no, but we are working to be more perfect—and that matters.
#House NOW holding 1st of 2 votes to re-refer Articles of #Impeachment against President Biden introduced by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) to the Judiciary and Homeland Security Cmtes. This vote is to close debate followed by a vote to send the Articles of Impeachment to Cmtes. 1/...
"Full transcript of CA Rep. Adam Schiff's response to his censure by the Trump-corrupted GOP House", #dailykos
"Today, I wear this partisan vote as a badge of honor, knowing that I have lived my oath...to hold a dangerous and out of control president accountable and knowing that I would do so again ..."
"... You flatter me with this falsehood. You, who are the authors of a big lie about the last election, must condemn the truth tellers, and I stand proudly before you."
"... No matter how many false justifications or slanders you level against me, you but indict yourselves. As Liz Cheney said, 'there will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.'”
"... Will it be said of you [Republicans] that you lacked the courage to stand up to the most immoral, unlawful and unethical president in history, but consoled yourselves by attacking those who did?"
California Rep. Adam Schiff becomes the 25th House member to be censured. The action, taken on a 213-209 party line vote, rebukes him for comments he made about investigations into Donald Trump’s ties to #Russia. He will be required to stand in front of the House while the resolution is read. https://apnews.com/article/318300df0f7b4f51c5b0ba5dd91edd23
"More than 20 #Republicans voted with #Democrats last week to block the censure resolution, but they changed their votes this week after the measure’s sponsor, Republican Rep. #AnnaPaulinaLuna of #Florida, removed a provision that could have fined #Schiff $16 million if the #HouseEthicsCommittee determined he lied."
Oh?! Not because #Trump said he would primary every #Republican who voted against the resolution?!?
They're effing spineless!
Steve Schmidt reacts to Donald Trumps’s disastrous interview on Fox News
."..this man is so unfit, there are no words for it in the English language. He is a pathological liar who during his four years in the White House, lied to the American people more than 35000 times; but the question that nobody has ever asked Donald Trump, is the obvious one; Do you sir not understand the difference between what is real and what is not? ..." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfVRRoFdmOw
"#DeSantis seized on the unusual retirement of three liberal justices at once to quickly remake the court.
He did so with the help of a secretive panel led by #LeonardLeo — the key architect of the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority — that quietly vetted judicial nominees in an Orlando conference room three weeks before the governor’s inauguration in 2019."
SOMEONE with a loud, powerful, effective, impactful voice MUST get the word out about this practicing fascist before Republican politics, gerrymandering, lax voter laws and corruption put him in the White House.
The Republicans I know (which comprise almost all the people I know IRL) have recognized Trump as a loser, but they enthusiastically support DeFascist.
We gotta, we gotta, we gotta keep him out of national politics!!
@GottaLaff I see some people seem to dislike her candidacy but I for one am glad she is running (and I wish there were many more democratic presidential candidates). I actually think it would be better for #democrats if #Biden wasn’t running for re-election because then more people would likely be in the primary race.
