So its done! I finally released a fairly easy to install (from scratch) Hugo based Static Site generator with full ActivityPub support.
It has step-by-step instructions on how to set it up for your own blog or static website.
One of the coolest features for me, other than having your static site blog posts show up as posts in the Fediverse is the support for interacting with those posts. Any replies you leave, likes, or boosts will show up in the "comments" section of the website on the page associated with the post. How cool is that!
If an actor provides an outbox URL, but not an inbox URL, it means that it cannot receive Follow activities and it can not push content to the followers. In such cases, the follower's server should switch to periodic polling like RSS.
This will enable statically-built blogs ( #jekyll#hugo etc) to appear in Mastodon network.
World Con was among the worst experiences in my life, where the formal writers event told me, literally "Stop writing dude" from two professionals. in the writing program I paid for for ritual humiliation, so to find out these vain glorious turds are now (like the WHO) owned lock stock and barrel by the CCP makes me feel vindicated.
I need advice or a hint from @gohugoio users. I want to make a fairly simple static webpage for a small restaurant, but the complex part is that they need to be able to edit this week’s menu. If I were the one editing the menu, that would be a no-brainer: SSH into my dev machine, edit the MD file, and do a simple git push. However, I need to make it simple for them, the restaurant staff. Please ping me if you have ideas.
Hrm. Another question for #Hugo (or #Jekyll really) users:
So you add a new News post. You go to upload. Uh. What files do you ACTUALLY upload?
In principle the answer is "well the new ones silly", but when your static site includes say, a Tag and a search system, how on earth do you know which changed and select only them?
Lately I just FTP up the whole folder, overwriting everything, and I feel like an idiot 😭 (or am I valid? maybe?)
I think that #hugo is great, and being able to use my preferred #OrgMode formatting for posts awesome, but I have to admit, the combined markdown for links is perhaps a /little/ over the top e.g.: [[{{< relRef other-page-name >}}][Link Text]]
I almost feel sorry for the round brackets who somehow weren't invited to this bracket fest, but perhaps the round brackets were already occupied keeping my #emacs running.
Tried once again to get my head around #Hugo, to make my new #BrokenCircus website easier to manage. It didn't take - perhaps it's a bit too late in the day.
Anyway, inspired by @vga256 's Tomo post from today, I built the whole thing in #PHP and it worked great and was really easy! So I've achieved what I set out to do.
Will still be a little more manual-labour than a fancy SSG, but it'll be a heck of a lot easier than HTML-by-hand.
I'm working on a new #hugo theme and while developing, I'm seeing this odd thing where changes to layouts/index.html is not triggering rebuild, so developing is hard.
anyone seen something like this before? layouts-wise I only have _defalt/[baseof, single, list, terms].html defined other than partials
So I am about to release v2.1.0 of #Fedipage (A Hugo based Static Page Generator that has ActivityPub/Fediverse support).
I am running the latest version on my personal page. Could anyone who has a moment check it out and see if you see any CSS glitches? Any feedback welcome. I will release later today.
Yesterday I tried to add a #blog in #hugo.
What a shitshow. There a 1000 blogs on the internet telling you how simple Hugo is, how fast.
And non explains (with examples) how to write a text in #md markdown or how to add an html formatted item #nerds who write simple in their blog of 16 pages howto do something really don't understand the are actually frustrating the beginner or intermediate.
Don't write "simple" because you already know something #hugo is complex and difficult
I presented “Emacs Turbo-Charges My Writing” at EmacsConf 2023 https://emacsconf.org/2023. I walk through my writing setup for #Emacs, going
through the workflow of writing in #OrgMode syntax with #Denote; and then
exporting to #Hugo. The text of this post pairs with the recorded conference
talk.
I did some reorganisation on my #hugo site today, and I thought I was being so clever using aliases, and.... the aliases are not working. I'm scratching my head for why, and am really quite confused.
Research has continued and I think that #WriteFreely, despite being a great piece of software, isn't really accurate for my needs and is a bit too restrictive.
#Hugo might be more what I need, so I'll look at upgrading to that at some point. I just need to work out how to self host it!
Making a getting started guide for screen reader users that want to try a Static Site Generator and I was sad to discover that #11ty is not in any Windows package manager I can find. If this isn’t correct let me know so I can get this right. For now, looks like the guide will be for Hugo #GoHugo#Hugo#SSG#StaticSiteGenerator
