The proposed legislation builds on foundation of the ’s previous adoption of principles of UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, with reconciliation, the high number of outstanding treaties with in legal battles as some of the driving factors.

Why A 79-Year-Old Former Police Officer & Dalit Human Rights Defender Faces Attempted Murder Charges

After a protest for land rights in Gorakhpur on 10 October 2023, the Uttar Pradesh police arrested 10 activists, mostly Dalit, including Sarwan Ram Darapuri despite little evidence of any overt violence at the gathering. Even though videos show police officers were present and listened to demands of an acre of land for marginalised communities, the protestors face charges of attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.

Sounds promising. What will the economic impact be on areas that currently specialise in palm oil production?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-66842496

palmoildetectives,

@wiletha There will be no impact, because pay equity in the supply chain is non-existent. This is according to a 2021 report by Chain Reaction Research which shows 66%+ of the gross profit goes to large corporates such as Ferrero, Nestle, Unilever, Cargill and Mondelez and 0% or below flows back to farmers. .

Most farmers are forced from their land and made to work on it for almost nothing

Panama’s Indigenous Naso kingdom has spent decades fighting for land rights in the form of a comarca. But after finally getting one in 2020, struggles to demarcate and protect the land have become increasingly overwhelming.

The Naso lack the resources to establish the borders of their territory, which makes preventing farming and other drivers of deforestation extremely difficult.
