In the last few years it is likely that PepsiCo has been using in its production palm oil from deforested land claimed by the Shipibo-Konibo people in eastern Peru, a new investigation has found.
Just been talking to someone about oil palm groves and palm oil in West Africa and it occurred to me that maybe some of you here might be interested in this article (from my preMastodon days). Not everything palm oil related is bad! #PalmOil#HistoricalEcology#Nigeria#Africa

Bought some more of the wonderful Candy Kittens a couple of days ago.
Whilst in the shop I noticed similar style, chewy sweet right next to them so I got a pack of The Natural Confectionery Co's Sour Squirms and one other.
Once home, I discovered they're nowhere near as good as Candy Kitten products purely because The Natural Conf. Co products are made with Palm Oil.
I won't buy again. Sticking to Candy Kittens which are palm oil free 💕
#ClimateDiary West Sumatra is the home province of my main research partner in #Sumatra (for my #PalmOil research). Just recently, we have been in touch to perhaps develop a new joint project on the palm oil sector and climate mitigation and adaptation in Sumatra. Horrible to read this now.
'The DSI and the IDI, with support from the 11th Hour Project, launched a new tool called PalmWatch on Feb. 22. Using rigorous data science and advanced, low-cost data visualization methods, PalmWatch traces palm oil supplies from the ground level, where the environmental and social impacts of palm oil cultivation occur, to the consumer brands that use the oil in their products.'
This new #palmoil tool does not include a single brand from #India#China#Indonesia or #Malaysia, the four largest consumption markets for palm oil, accounting for the majority of demand, and, likely, an even greater percentage of deforestation due to lax due diligence requirements.
We're not going to solve supply chain deforestation by only focusing on global north demand.
As oil palm plantations encroach on rainforests, wild primates increasingly enter them to forage, where they face the threat of being eaten by feral dogs, killed for raiding crops, or caught by traffickers for the pet trade.
A new study from Peninsular Malaysia finds that exposure to oil plantations also significantly increases the risk of death among infant southern pig-tailed macaques.
