It might be because you didn't tag the posts as politics. Seems dumb but Rule 7 states:

I'm tired of hearing about AI, to be honest. I never cared for it. I don't respect people who use generative AI, and I despise companies that sell out people's data to train it. Yes, people will lose jobs to it, but the world will not be better for it. It's just that consequences are rarely immediately apparent in such complex systems.

Jakra,
@Jakra@aus.social avatar

@Gargron As always, there will be enormous benefits, for a small percentage of the population. Whether the benefits flow on to the rest of the economy, at the global, national, and local levels remains to be seen.
The eventual benefits of the industrial revolution, which took away jobs, and disrupted the economy, are the very foundation of our current, technological world.
The fact that those same changes to the economy also cause climate change, waste on a truly horrendous scale, the poisoning of the air and water, should not be overlooked. So even if AI eventually becomes an economic boon to the world, it may well still be to the detriment of the planet.
Or maybe I just think the sky is falling.

Climate change deniers are especially infuriating to me as someone who has experienced the effects of it firsthand.

The insanely high number of historic floods happening at a never before seen frequently and destroying people’s lives makes it very personal.

Am now listening to the audiobook of Nick Wallis's THE GREAT POST OFFICE SCANDAL, read by Nick Wallis himself.

Strangely, the tens of thousands of pounds (up to £50,000-70,000 in some cases) in discrepancies between the cash in the safe and the balance reported by the Post Office's HORIZON system almost always seem to lie in the Post Office's favour, i.e., it is the Sub-Postmasters who owe money not t'other way about...

PhilipCJames,
@PhilipCJames@mas.to avatar

In retrospect, the frequent court-room insistence of the Post Office that Sub-Postmasters rinsed in court by agree not to blame the Post Office's IT system HORIZON to avoid gaol sentences should have waved a very large red flag.

Those in Fujitsu and Post Office Ltd who repeatedly perjured themselves and essentially committed fraud insisting Sub-Postmasters pay money they didn't owe should be tried and do time themselves.

So, that TV show has stirred up a lot of interest in the Post Office saga. I've been following the Inquiry on the live feed for over a year now!

It's become pretty clear, that POL, being able to bring its own prosecutions was a big part of the problem. Even the Police have the CPS as a check and balance.

But I think there are many other issues too.

Core systems and infrastructure outsourced to third parties, offering/encumbered by legal separation. PFI, this is a consequence, I guess.

Commercial pressures hollowing out expertise. Poor calibre staff reduced to box ticking. Training seen as a cost etc.

Also, from listening to the Inquiry, it seems to me that laws and best practice are changing at speed and becoming increasingly complex. It's almost as if companies like POL cannot keep up. Yet, other, older law considers computer evidence always correct, which is bizzare.

It's a real mess which stems from breakup with Royal Mail, I think.

But at the end of the day it was the UK Govt. that created POL and it was also ultimately responsible for running the Post Office. Govt. defined the ethos, they appointed the leadership.

There is a Govt. minister who is meant to oversee all this, but given the rate of change and calibre of ministerial appointments nowadays it's hardly surprising that control was lost.

Usually when I talk to people about my political beliefs, they reproach me that my views are unrealistic and utopian. That there is no possibility of creating a society based on horizontal hierarchy, they say.

These same people, for some reason, fail to see the utopian nature of their belief that a political culture based on cunning and competition will not ultimately lead to the seizure of power by cynical individuals perpetuating that power for their own benefit. Something we can observe ever since hierarchical structures and states emerged.

I just find it funny.

"OMG Trump called his domestic enemies vermin! This is a lot like Hitler, who called his domestic enemies rats!"

Listen, you're not wrong. But let's not forget how USA propaganda called Japanese-Americans "vermin," yes, in that exact wording, and compared them to insects as well as rodents, to justify the Japanese internment camps. How USA propaganda called Italian immigrants rats (anarchist rats at that!) to justify cutting off immigration from there.

Yes, you should be alarmed. I'm not saying don't be alarmed. I'm saying you're not alarmed enough.
