Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku? – Episode 3 – The Suspicious Mushroom People Village

In the last episode, the girls finally arrive at Higashi-Agano, and the people with mushrooms on their heads greet them. You may think they are friendly, but there is something that Akira, the girl who gets into arguments with Reimi, is very suspicious of them, and probably for a good reason.

Believe it or not, I find it fascinating how these […]

Want some for your post-apocalyptic story? Four years after the pandemic started, 7 out of 7 examined -powered candles had burst batteries. 3 out of 7 had destroyed circuitry and were irreparable. I restored four of the candles to working order with a lot of cleaning and scrubbing, but of course they required fresh .

Takeaway: Nothing battery-powered left for four years will work when found. Much of it will be destroyed.

Bonus: Gasoline has a shelf life and may be useless in 6-12 months. Sorry, no verisimilitude in Mad Max.

Modern medicine is the true miracle of our times. People who're nostalgic for the olden days haven't aged enough or aren't thinking their needs through. My natural lifespan was 50 but I survived cancer and the spouse's was 38 because of a burst appendix. We've got meds that keep us alive. Unlike insulin, we might go a couple years before dying miserably. Things need to think about when stories.

You're right. I've a friend with an old Plymouth arrow pickup who helped out the resterauteers in his vicinity by taking old frier oil for his vehicle. Was a win win for him, and in a world, diesel vehicles may rule the decaying roads.

Would an AM or FM radio station be easier to maintain in a Post Apocalyptic world? How much power would a decent size radio station take to operate? (Mainly the broadcasting tower).

Well, that's Win10 set up, and hopefully opted out of all the surveillance crap I can opt out of.

Pretty dystopian that Windows tells me during the installation that I will see ads on Windows, huh?

And "leave everything to us" while the setup finishes? Also dystopian.

@amberage Let's put this in perspective from a SF author point of view. We are slowly moving away from hardcopy, though you can find books. We are definitely moving away from optical media. In its place are multiple digital copies stored in at least two or three sights around the world (business do that, anyway). If the one in Texas gets nuked, the one in India might survive?

What happens 50 years from now when there is nothing but digital—this is where the SF part comes in—and civilization crumbles? When people later try to reconstruct, all human knowledge is lost!

Oh my. (That's deep background of one of my universes.)

I loved Iain Banks's "A Song of Stone" for its beautiful and evocative prose.

One of my favorite descriptions on page 70: "The lithe trout's body, a single fluid muscle wrapped in rainbow tissue, stays inflexible as bone."

Page 70 of Iain Banks's "A Song of Stone" highlighted passage: "The lithe trout's body, a single fluid muscle wrapped in rainbow tissue, stays inflexible as bone."

Last night I watched The Day, a movie I had no idea I even had on my Plex machine. I think I got it as an offhand recommendation/mention on a reddit r/Horror thread. Anyway, damn! It's almost black and white, post apocalyptic, contextually super sparse and a hell of a ride. If you like your horror bleak you'll enjoy this one. It looks like it's available on Prime as well.

"Strap in and get ready for a wild ride that sidesteps stale first-contact tropes and brings us something fresh, with enough humanity, whiz-bang tech and a roller-coaster of a plot that ends with a bang. A masterful work of modern-day sci-fi."

I'm not one for "New Year's resolutions", but I am one for overly ambitious projects.

For 2023, Project365 is "One New Game Per Day".

Given that I have 634 unplayed games in my Steam account and {mumble} unredeemed bundle Steam keys, there's a reason my unplayed collection is tagged "Pile of Shame".

I'll pin this to my profile, and give a brief summary here each day (or x, if I miss x days due to work or stuff).

I'll play 15-30 minutes of (at least) one new game I've never played before (or played less than 15 minutes of). I'll give every game at least 15 minutes, even if I hate every minute of it.

I'm also open to suggestions; if you reply to this thread with a game, I'll schedule it, or tell you what I thought of it.

One of the things that's come up is that I have a bunch of games that I've played once, and not touched again.

Unplayed games:
Trying a game again:
Going live on Twitch:

I'll hashtag these with so you can mute it if you're not interested.

December 30, 2023 - Day 364 - NewPlay Bonus Review
Total NewPlays: 396

Game: Wasteland 3

Platform: Steam
Release Date: Aug 29, 2020
Installation Date: Dec 21, 2023
Unplayed: 9d
Playtime: 54m

Wasteland 3 is an isometric squad-based RPG with turn-based combat mechanics.

Apparently it's all RPGs all day here. Less "all", and more "this afternoon", because I ended up spending all morning cleaning out my desk and sorting screws.

Yeah, I forgot my ADHD meds, and today has been erratic. The kicker was discovering that I'd doubled up on a day count back in early October, meaning that instead of only needing to play one extra game per day for three days, it was two extra games today, and two tomorrow to hit my "400 new games" goal.

Anyway, turns out I've had a bunch of cool isometric RPGs just sitting in my unredeemed Steam keys spreadsheet; it's suddenly an embarrassment of riches, between Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, BG3, and now Wasteland 3.

Having not played the previous two Wasteland games, I thought it was some kind of post-apocalyptic FPS, but instead it's a post-apocalyptic RPG set in a nuclear winter affected Colorado.

The game starts out with a cut-scene talking about what happened to the Desert Rangers after the events of Wasteland 2 (and providing enough information for context), explaining that the Desert Rangers are on their way to Colorado to meet with "the owner of Colorado" to seek assistance for Arizona (I really need to look at a US map).

Looked at the map, got distracted. Anyway, things do not go according to plan, and you get ambushed on your way, and off the game goes.

Looks like I've got a lot of RPGs to play in 2024, because Wasteland 3 seems:
