A fully soldered board, three dozen wires later, worked from the first launch.
Not very surprising - I’m usually precise and methodical :) But I won’t show the other side, it’s very difficult to neatly solder all these wires.

Fully soldered player board plays C.C.Catch disc on CDROM drive

What's next? firmware? No!
Next I will design and print the enclosure for this thing. Well, because I haven’t printed in a while and because the last thing I want is to touch and damage one of this pile of wires🙃

Enclosure will be simple, but I'll try something new: I've never used heat inserts before🙃
I just need to figure out what diameter the holes should be.

Hey @hyc did you ever get a RISC-V system running? I recall a conversation about a LicheePi at one point.

RISC-V Membership in the organization was up 23% in 2023. Almost two billion systems-on-a-chip (SoC) incorporating the RISC-V architecture have been produced. A forecast from the SHD Group pegs that number to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 40% over the rest of this decade. Most major silicon vendors and cloud providers are exploring and adopting .

After a week away, I fired up the VisionFive 2 again yesterday, and it reignited my enthusiasm for both RISC-V and single-board computers.

Which is to say, this computer that does almost nothing has me looking forward to the release of the HiFive Pro 550 (which will let me do almost nothing much faster) and the Lichee Console 4A (which will let me do almost nothing on the go).

In the confusing mess that is the "Milk-V" I had missed that SiFive's P670 is finally set to ship in a generally available product (https://www.phoronix.com/news/Milk-V-Oasis + https://www.phoronix.com/news/SG2380-RISC-V-SoC-Upgrade).

That's probably the most feature-rich core wrt. to all the RISC-V extensions. It's RVA22 + crypto. That includes a humble 128-bit vector, bit manipulation, cache ops, ...)

SPEC2k6Int of ~12. Not a speed demon, but looks to be faster (ST) than any other GENERALLY available silicon.

Great news for anyone who wants to do enablement for their packages/software!

Launchpad - after fixing some bugs in and OpenStack's Nova - now has generally available riscv64 builders that you can use for both PPAs and snap remote builds. Here the full blog post! https://blog.launchpad.net/ppa/self-service-riscv64-builds

Now it's time to start enabling all the snaps I use on the daily to run on RISC-V! No more suffering with my underpowered riscv64 emulators 😅
